melting door handle

I just bought a 2014 435i. I love it but that's the aside.

I have noticed other posts about the door handle melting and being gummy. I have that issue also.

I will probably end up replacing it but wanted to suggest something that helped as a bandaid. I applied a thin layer of clear nail polish (wife's idea if I'm being honest) and it stopped the gummi-ness. Might be temporary but it sure makes it less annoying in the short term.

That nail polish will probably start to chip and when go grab the handle that will prick you pretty good. I'd just wrap electrical tape over it

Rather than electrical tape, I'd recommend using gaffer tape for something like that. The adhesive is stronger and it is designed to not leave a sticky residue. Using electrical tape on anything, even higher quality tape, will eventually lead to it slipping off and leaving a sticky mess on the surface.

Gaffer tape is a fairly expensive tape, though.

Wouldn’t a more permanent solution be to vinyl wrap them or can’t this be done as they are soft?

You do realize a non-OEM replacement can be found for less than $20 USD shipped?

Simply search eBay (or others) for the appropriate number and follow instructions in the video above.

Absolutely PERFECT solution to sticky handles

Well, at the risk of making everyone mad posting about a particular product.... I'm gonna say:

My F30 had the dreaded sticky/gummy door handle failure thing going on. I snapped these on and the door handle was PERFECT. No disassembly or tools required. Takes maybe 30 seconds to snap these on. They feel very secure and sturdy once you put them on. Went with the carbon fiber to get the glossy look. Too bad the black is not available in high gloss. You won't regret this purchase.

I am not affiliated with the product or Amazon in any way:

There's no prohibition about posting a product link, so long as it's not to your own website. If you're not Jeff Bezos go for it.

I keep seeing these sticky handle posts. My 2016 inner handles are the same as new. You use them twice each time in the car — to close and then open the door - that’s it. Are you all constantly holding the handles? What the heck are y’all putting in your hands to cause this? Lol

I actually looked at those elsewhere, and I don't have the sticky handles yet. They look nice, for what you can see of them.

But what is the expert installation for $99.95? Will some bozo come to my house in a N95 mask and gloves and snap those in for me for a hundred bucks?

Amazon... and their expert installation. Btw that is just a quote, it could go up after they assessed the difficulty....

Hmmm? Mine were gummy when I got it recently--a 2016 340i.

I cleaned them. They are still somewhat 'soft' but I believe that's probably so you have a decent grip.

I had 'gummified' plastic parts on my e46 and learned some products can really f up the finish and can make them feel gummy. I believe the solution is mild soap and water. I'll also sometimes use a baby wipe or alcohol mixed with mild soap--sort of similar to bmw's interior cleaner.

Don't be too creative with cleaning products and of course test them in an inconspicuous area first.

I believe with effort, you can clean and mitigate this stickiness and save some time and $.

Bump

This method works. Just dab some hand soap & water on a microfiber towel and start with a light scrub.
