Mine can go through just under a foot of water but very slowly, I wouldn't attempt it though however if you're on unfamiliar roads it'll be an easy mistake to make

The OP simply made a mistake and misjudged the the depth of the puddle, the same as if he had pulled out of a junction on someone and they hit his car. I would not accept anything less than a full payout from the insurance if the car is damaged.

I agree that is how I would have expected an insurer to view the situation. However, it appears that flooding can be treated a little differently - this is from Admiral:

Quote:
Does car insurance cover flood damage?
If you have a fully comprehensive car insurance policy you may be able to claim for damage to your vehicle as a result of a flood as long as you’ve taken every precaution to safeguard your car. If you take a risk and drive your car into a flood, you may not be covered for any damage caused.

Most insurers put flood damage into two categories – avoidable flood damage and unavoidable flood damage. Avoidable damage could be classed as someone driving into flood water – you never know how deep it is.

Six inches of water is enough to reach the bottom of most cars causing potential loss of control and stalling. Cars can float in just 12ins of water while 2ft of water is enough to drag away most cars.

Unavoidable flood damage could be classed as your car getting damaged by floods when it’s parked at its usual spot – such as at home.
https://www.admiral.com/magazine/gui...r-flood-damage
Others insurers seem to take a similar view.

I think they would be on to a looser if they tried to enforce this sort of thing too much, after all they would need to argue it was reasonable to get out, walk into the middle of the puddle or flood, measure it, know the capabilities exactly of the cars ability to deal with water etc etc

its the kind of stuff the public can't be deemed to reasonably know, and as such unless you did this repeatedly, or had no real reason to be out in such weather then I cant see them quibbling.

They also use the "may not be covered" rather than an exclusion in the policy, so unless you drove it into the north sea, I imagine you will be ok.

Nope, they just expect you to NOT DRIVE THROUGH if you don't know how deep it is.

Thanks for all the replies and advice.

Car is now with the local dealer and as some of you have said it is wait and see.

At the time it happened I saw the water ahead and watch another saloon car ahead of me go through the water successfully so once the wave had abated I followed slowly but tried to keep the revs up which is difficult in an automatic, the car got half way through and then stopped. The electrics remained working and when trying to start just got a clunk noise. No water in the cabin or the boot or boot well.

While stranded I was passed by about 6 cars which had no problems but they weren't bmw's! also passed by 2 horseriders!!!

I'll let you all know what happens next

If it’s fucked and the insurance try to be cocks about it mention that to them, that other ordinary cars were passing through it with no problem so you assumed it was safe to do so.

Well 500mm is the same as the X5 & X7 so it's good enough for me

What scares me about all this is with the car so heavily dependent on electronics, what if you go under and the car refuses to let you open the door or window.
