40i & 35d engines

Whats happened to the 40i engines to make them so slow?

According to the BMW configurator, 440i is now 5.0s, 0 to 60 and the 340i is 5.1s.
The 335d is still at 4.8s and the 435d is 4.7s.

Was it always that way?

Petrol Particulate Filters

Also the 335D's have always been quicker to 60 due to X-Drive.

Garage List
BMW Press Launch - 340i sDrive = 4.8s and for the (US) 340i xDrive = 4.6s.

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1124143

So if you've got one of the 'old' ones it's faster and therefore worth lots more!

I thought I remembered both being sub 5s times.
0.5s slower for the 340i is a big chunk.....

Power output hasn't dropped, it's still 240kW.

UK site always quotes 0-62mph times which comes out around 0.2 seconds slower than 0-60 times that the US site quotes, I'm sure some rounding goes into it, I know X3 M40i is quoted as 4.8s to 62mph on UK and site and on US site it is 4.6a to 60mph

UK reviews always seem to add to confusion some quote one figure others quote the other

Because the torque is available at much lower revs. But you know that already.

A friend of mine has a Tesla P100d (d isn’t for diesel ) it does 0-60 in its ‘ludicrous’ mode in something like 2.8 seconds. Maximum torque is available from 0 rpm! If you ever get chance to have a go in one, I recommend it - it’s like being fired out of a catapult!

They've ALWAYS said the 335D has been quicker than the 340i. They've not changed. They have also said the 335D is SLOWER over 1/4 mile or to 100mph but hey lets not get the precious diesel owners knickers in a twist.

I think they are only available in the states.

Its not ALL about 0-60 time but I do know that now I could beat a standard 335D to 60 in my 340i and at the same time I could smoke the rear tyres up and be a hooligan.

I believe in the States they record their 0-60 times slightly differently. I think they record it from a rolling start rather than standstill.

If you follow any of the American car magazines they consistently record faster 0-60 times than UK magazines.

Plus of course we record 0-62 which doesn't sound much different but depending on gearing and whether a change from 2nd to 3rd is required can make a difference.

If you are looking at the bmw uk configurator it’ll be 0-62 and not 0-60.

According to this 2016 brochure .........

https://www.baronsgroup.co.uk/pdf/bm...e-brochure.pdf

BMW 440i.
This 3.0 litre BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line petrol engine combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with VALVETRONIC, Double-VANOS and High-precision direct injection. This intelligent package of innovations lowers average fuel consumption from 36.7–41.5mpg (6.8–7.7l/100km), with CO2 emissions of 159–179g/km on the Coupé and 39.2mpg (7.2l/100km) and 167g/km for the Convertible. This enables impressive performance: 326hp (240kW), a maximum torque of 450Nm and acceleration of the Coupé from 0 to 62mph in just 5.0 seconds with automatic transmission (5.2 seconds with manual). In the Convertible, the automatic transmission accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 5.4 seconds. Both the Coupé and Convertible have an electronically limited top speed of 155mph (250km/h).

So nothing has changed with the 0-62.

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/pe...teptronic.html

vs

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/pe...e_touring.html

Both F31 spec. 340i = rwd, 335d = xdrive

340i - 0-60 = 4.9 / 0-70 = 6.2 / 0-100 = 12s
335d - 0-60 = 4.9 / 0-70 = 6.4 / 0-100 = 13.1s

need any more?

Adding to that..

340i - 50-80 = 3.8
335d - 50-80 = 4.2
