Most engines have no issues, even running well over the 100,000 mile mark. For those who change oil so often, what mileages do you intend to run them to, 200,000 miles or more in your ownership? As to the comments on break-in. Over here many of the oil burning engines are traced to not being broken in hard enough. Applies to a lot of diesel motors where users have decent performance without using revs, so oil control never gets sorted, glazing rather than bedded in properly. Those who "use" their engines, typically have the engines which doesn't burn oil. BTW. I agree with break-in periods, but not too soft, they need some decent work, (without abuse) to bed them in properly. |

and I agree with you break-in has to be done right and the rings need to expand under pressure in order to do so |

I see the benefit to long term owners, I personally have doubts with the 20,000 mile oil services, particularly if not driven a majority of highway miles. I've gone for interim changes on my N55 engine, so about 8 - 9,000 miles, or one year.

I changed my filter a month ago, at about 3,000 miles. The oil was clean, the filter was filthy, which is as it should be, as cleaning the crud out of the oil is what it's there for. If I'd found the filter to be clean then I'd rethink changing it at such a low mileage, but seeing how dirty it was told me I'd made the right decision.

The filter I replaced got dirty, and it was installed when the oil was. Like I said, the purpose of the filter is to keep the oil clean. In order to do that the filter will get dirty. Is it worth it? Maybe, maybe not, but ten bucks every six months isn't going to break my budget.

Diesel is typically far dirtier inside than a petrol engine. Far more carbon in the oil, oil will be dirty to look at in a few miles after a change. |

Half BMW cycle change of the oil and filter only costs about 100.00 here from the dealership. It's added piece of mind and I let the dealership do it because if there's ever an engine issue they have the record of oil/filter changes and when they were done.

Its funny seeing the wear analysis on these cars and what is considered normal. Its part of my job to test oil samples on Jet and turbine engines and the wear limits are so low compared to a car obviously just makes you chuckle when people have it done on a car with not many mods.

it would only make sense to change oil early if the car is brand new, 3000miles in as soon as the engine is past the break-in stage. this way, you get rid of all the metal shavings early on in the cars life.
