It can't hurt, but probably won't help. IMO changing the filter in between oil changes is a good idea. It's easy to do yourself, and only costs about ten bucks. I don't drive enough to change the oil more than once a year, but I change the filter after six months.

at most i would do it twice as often as the recommended interval. especially if you are in a lot of stop and go traffic or driving aggressively.

I had mine changed at about 1300 miles after break-in and while it was at the dealership getting the exhaust and mppk installed, and charge pipe swapped. Sure doesn't hurt anything, any real advantage is unknown. Like already mentioned I would keep it on an interval of being changed every 6-7000 miles more for the filter at that point.

I do it on all my cars at 1200 or thereabouts. It's only $100 so not a big investment. Maybe it helps, maybe not. But on the off chance it helps I'm happy to spend the $100.

I had my local BMW service change my oil and filter after break in miles were reached, I believe it got done at about 1,900 miles.
I made sure they did NOT reset the service indicator as well. So I'll have 2 oil changes in the first 10k miles. Big whoop, an extra $100 for peace of mind. I always change the oil and filter after break in mileage on any new car. Cheap insurance and a better feeling in general about the oil, even if it is synthetic. |

Did mine at 1400 mi after breakin
If its good for an M car its good enuf for me.. besides breakin was as-usual until the recent insanity of lifetime fluids etc.. If you own and want longer life breakin and change oil after breakin.. if you DIY it only costs around $50-60 |

Same for the diff fluids as well. Ms ship with break in specific fluids throughout that need replaced. On a non-M the oil and filter is just in case there is some microscopic metal floating around the system. Engines are built to very tight tolerances and as they break in there can be some wear. As things break in, little tiny pieces are worn off.

On my E46 I had done a number of 10k analyses once I started doing BMW's 12month/10k cycle, and they were always clean. So I no longer feel any distrust towards a 10k change with a BMW engine for my personal driving habits. My driving style works out to 10k every 12 months, so it falls nicely in line with BMW's schedule. I'll add that I've seen analyses that were "dirtier" than mine for the same mileage, so definitely driving conditions/habits matter. Also some people just feel more comfortable changing oil more frequently regardless of the evidence/science, and that's fine. We buy these cars out of emotion, so if anybody feels the hugs from extra oil changes then by all means go for it. |

5,000 to 6,000, that's my yearly mileage. I don't commute, just errands and vacation trips.

filter change
thats the perfect mileage for an oil change considering you have a highway car. do you think its a good idea to change the oil filter halfway through the interval, is it dirty when you pull it out? i changed my filter with the oil together after roughly 5000 miles but im looking for opinions on this. thanks alot
