Ski pass through, subwoofer setup idea.. Thoughts welcomed..

So I have an Orion 600D amp and a 10" Sundown E10 V.3 D2 500w RMS sub that I'm gonna throw in my F30.. I was thinking a rear trunk corner enclosure would be nice, but I've lately been contemplating the idea of just having the subwoofer mounted so it's firing through the ski pass through.. One idea was an IB setup, but I'm not sure if this subwoofer would work good on that kind of setup.. The other is to just build a box out of MDF board to match the subwoofers needs.. Anyone else have good success with a ski pass through subwoofer setup in an F30..??

Thanks!

The long wavelengths created by subs don't need a direct air path from the trunk to the cabin. That's why idiots with monster subs can be heard three blocks away.

I just didn't wanna be all trunk rattle and no interior bass, so that's why I figured the ski pass would help open it up a bit .

All you'd get by doing that is to allow above bandwidth shorter wavelength harmonics that you don't want to get into the cabin. Trunk rattle is pretty much unavoidable if you play the sub louder than you probably should.

Looking at the Manufacturers web pages, they suggest 0.5 cu ft sealed and 1 cu ft ported boxes for your Sub. So just leaving it open into the boot (trunk) won't give your Sub the best chance.

Although not in an F30, I've heard a box mounted to the ski hatch giving great results. If that's your favoured mounting position, go for it.

Yeah I'm thinking of configuring something to get it to work..

My boy said you basically build a narrow box right behind the rear seats and just center the sub in to that ski port location.. Doesn't sound too intense to build it myself, so I'll give it a go most likely in a few weeks!

Someone makes an enclosure that replaces the fold down armrest. Not sure if it's for your car or not though you'd have to google a bit.

EDIT: sorry this is what I was thinking of. You replace the ski trim with this.

That's pretty awesome.. I'm gonna contact them to see if they'd make an F30 one.. Or if they'd send the build specs and I could make my own.. Thanks bro!

No problem. I spoke with a local shop about a different project and he said he does armrest boxes like that all the time and it's very easy. So you could def get someone to knock one out for you for a few hundred. You would start by looking at the size of face plate, figure out size of speaker and exact one you wanted, then build the butt part accordingly to get proper volume. Again very easy for folks who do this stuff.

I "would" want a sub there for direct placement in to the cabin.. I've heard armrest setups that slam, and I never use the backseat so driving around with the armrest down isn't gonna bother me..

I have a 10inch in the trunk in a stealth box and that already slaps wayyy too loud...

arm rest sub just sounds like overkill... you probably wouldnt be able to hear anything but bass...

your hair will probably raise with a armrest sub

Lol yeah i'm looking for that deep bass but still want to keep my vocals loud.. I'm thinking with the HK system that won't be too hard though, it already screams pretty loud..

i recommend going with bavsound speakers... i went bavsound with stock hifi amp and it makes a world of difference. many people upgrade to jl 6 channel but i feel like the stock speakers didnt necessarily need more power but just more clarity and crisp sound that the stocks didnt have. Many people on the forums have even stated that the bavsound sounds way better than the HK, if you even look at the magnet sizes it doesnt even compare..

let me know what you end up doing... gonna slap either way! good luck with build.

Magnet size means nothing. The best drivers made today use neodymium magnets, which are roughly 10% the size of ceramic magnets. They're also roughly twice the price of ceramic magnets. Stock BMW drivers have neodymium magnets. Bavsound drivers may work better than stock, they may not. I haven't seen any data to back up that claim. But if they do it has nothing to do with the size of the magnets.

I did this in my e90 to let the bass into the cabin I think it sounds so much better you can turn the sub down everything sounded more balanced and that's just with simply adding this air whole in the ski pass I'm currently figuring out a way to do this to my f30 but I don't have a ski pass and it's just metal there I think

If they do then it's no larger than that of the BMW drivers. Perhaps they have a cover on it to give the appearance of being larger than they really are. However, looking at their installation video for the Stage One the installer says that their magnets are ferrite, which is what they look like, and that the ferrite adds a depth to the sound that neodymium can't give. That statement is simply false.

Thanks for the input guys, and also images, much appreciated..!

I already bought the sundown 10" woofer, and I've been really on the fence about the bavsound setup as well, but it sounds like it's definitely worth it.

I have Bavsound throughout the car, their amp, then a JL 600 w 8" Focal in my convertible and 10" in my wagon. Definitely worth the $. Make sure to prewire for remotes in armrest when you have the car apart even if you add amps down the road. I have both the URC3 and JL remotes in there.

bavsound will be your best option for plug and play install and sounds great..

i installed it myself with no prior audio experience and only took a two hours and that included installing sound deadening material in the side of all the door and speaker area... plenty of reviews on this forum about bavsound... they even have a 100 day money back guarantee on their site if you dont like it...
