Handbrake strip and clean - Dealer con?

Guys, I’m after you thoughts please?

My 66 plate 340i has gone in for its first service this morning, as I have the service pack I thought great it will be covered.

I also asked them to look at a squeaking handbrake, when you release it, squeaks quite loudly when you drive off for the first 10 seconds. They have advised it needs a handbrake strip and clean at £140

The car has not yet done 6000 miles, so would you agree this should not need doing at this sort of mileage?

I’m currently trying to argue my case with the dealership and a Customer Services - thoughts please?

TIA

Mike

Why would you have to pay for it? Surely they should be doing that under warranty if it is required

I would advise using it even when in park. My Dad never used to use his handbrake on his auto xc90 and apparently it can cause them to seize. Might not be the same on your car but better to be on the safe side...

You can clean a manual handbrake by applying it while driving. The brake lights won’t be lit so this is best done with no one behind!

I do this every few weeks to remove corrosion. It used to be suggested in the manual, and perhaps still is.

I'd be telling the dealer to bugger off in regards to paying for it!!!

On what basis do they think you should be stumping up the price to fix it (given the car hasn't even done 6K miles yet)?

Ok, so after having a moan to Dealership they have seen sense and agreed to do the work without charge.

They are still claiming it wasn’t covered by the warranty and were saying that because the car hasn’t done many miles, the issue could be lack of use.

I tried explaining that the car gets used most days so it is not as though it’s laid up for long periods.

Sometimes Dealer logic baffles me, but as they are doing the work I gave up arguing.

Perhaps I should drive with the handbrake on more often.

I've used it about once in the last 10+ years of driving autos when we had a holiday rental with a really steep drive. Never had any problems or heard of any such.

I believe it is a known problem - I had it - it was a warranty job to clean it, no questions asked in my case...

Got exact same issue on mine, have already taken it in before and they replaced handbrake spreaders I think they said, but doing it again now. Charged me £90 last time on old E90 just to clean it out and didn't even fix problem! Think it's just a BMW "thing" they do...

Name your dealer and shame them, they have no right to charge you for this with a car with such low mileage.

I had mine in for the same thing this month (and the creaky doors).

When I got to the service reception (after having it booked in for a month due to the wait on courtesy cars) there was a note on the pad saying a brake clean would be chargeable.

I politely told the guy I wasn't paying for a "clean" when the handbrake was sticking and I wasn't charged anything when I picked it up (I also mentioned there was a known PUMA for the fault, no idea if there is or not!). They didn't tell me what they did but it hasn't happened since.

I had the same issue and was told the same £140 to clean story. Mine is out of warranty but has a service pack.

I spent 2hrs fixing it myself and treated the wheels to a deep clean and C5 wheel armour at the same time.

Adjusting the handbrake will fix it.

People who have said that the "cleaning" worked probably had the handbrake adjusted at the same time, the cleaning does nothing, adjusting the handbrake will fix it.

*unting dealers!

Manual specifically states to engage hand brake when pulling away from time to time to stop one side binding. Still crap service from dealer tho!

My old M3 did this and 335d before that. Sounded bloody awful pulling off the drive in the morning. Like a 15 year old car.
