'14 335i GT xDrive rattle (possibly water pump)
Hi everyone. I've had a '14 335i GT since April of last year. I bought it used from a BMW dealership and save for a charge pipe (mostly my fault. need to upgrade.) it's been an absolute peach.
A few months ago, it developed a rattle and I thought nothing of it. Fast forward to now, the rattle is still there and I'm thinking something might be wrong. The noise is only apparent after the engine has gotten up to temperature and I've been driving for a while (15-30 minutes). It's most noticeable when idling at a stop light on a slight incline and even more so when in sport/sport+ and with the shift lever tilted to the left in sport mode. I'd describe it as a constant crunchy sound similar to running a stick along a fence. It seems to be located in the engine bay towards the front on the passenger side. It's only there when the car is in drive and it goes away when the car is put into park and when pressure is applied to the top of the engine cover. I've narrowed it down to two possibilities. 1. I've read that the waste gate could be loose/rattling and that's what I'm hearing. 2. The bearings in the water pump could be on their way out. I'll be taking it to the dealership sometime next week to see what they say, but wanted to pick your guys' collective brain to see if I should check anything else. |
