Just changed oil: potentially stripped plug

Hello,

Just changed oil and while putting the plug in and setting my torque wrench to 8lb I noticed that it kept spinning so I stopped. The area where the Allen meets the plug is a little deformed and I noticed that the plug kept going.

My question is which has more potential to strip? The plug or the pan? Hopefully the plug is just a little stripped and able to be extracted not a big deal. Do plugs strip more often then pans or is the whole guy done for?

Also how much does this usually cost to fix if it is?

Will take it to a shop tommorrow. No more diy for me..

Tried to change oil and seems as though I stripped the drain plug. Asking if the pan is easier to strip or the plug, and a ballpark of what the pan might cost to replace if needed.

The drain plug is a bit finicky and will keep spinning after its tight.

Are you sure its stripped?

As long as you put it on perfectly square and didnt cross thread it... your probably fine.

And dont get discouraged with DIY... this is only the start, take your time and learn from your mistakes! No problem.

Mine was stripped too.. I dont remember ever tightening it too hard.

Luckily I was still under warranty and the dealer fixed it and rethreaded it for me.

Didn’t know the pan was able to be rethreaded since it’s plastic. Good to know.

I will monitor the plug for leaks over today and tomorrow.

Did you use a new plug? The correct OEM grade oil filter comes with a new plug, as once removed they should not be used again.

Highly doubt there is any re threading to be done on a plastic pan.

Dont take every bit of advice as accurate on here. Some models (xDrive) come with a metal drain pan.

This is only true if you buy the OEM oil filter from the dealer right? Only buying it from the dealer will it include a new plug?

They're included with Mahle and Mann filters no matter where you get them.

Interesting, guess for my vehicle it is just a drain plug crush washer. Thought it would be a plastic replaceable drain plug like your's.

Mine doesn't have a plastic plug, it's metal, just like my pan. XDrive N20s have metal pans, RWD have plastic. I don't know what 335s use.

Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the torque spec was 8nm, not 8 pounds. 8nm is roughly 70 inch-pounds. So if you torqued it to 8 foot-pounds you over torqued it quite a bit.

I guess there is my answer. I did stop once i realized something didn't feel right so hopefully nothing too bad happened. Will check the plug tonight to see if any oil is leaking from it.

It's an easy mistake to make. Don't sweat it. I would second what's been said already. Don't give up on DIY. Some growing pains are just part of the process.

So metal pans with metal drain bolts that just have a crush washer that needs to be replaced every time oil is changed, correct?

I was teaching my son and he did the same exact thing. Just a bit too tight and spun it all the way around. What's the recommended repair? Nothing is leaking and i had it running for a while in my driveway.
