Just changed oil: potentially stripped plug
Hello,
Just changed oil and while putting the plug in and setting my torque wrench to 8lb I noticed that it kept spinning so I stopped. The area where the Allen meets the plug is a little deformed and I noticed that the plug kept going. My question is which has more potential to strip? The plug or the pan? Hopefully the plug is just a little stripped and able to be extracted not a big deal. Do plugs strip more often then pans or is the whole guy done for? Also how much does this usually cost to fix if it is? Will take it to a shop tommorrow. No more diy for me.. Last edited by poomunj; 02-13-2019 at 07:56 AM.. |

The drain plug is a bit finicky and will keep spinning after its tight.
Are you sure its stripped? As long as you put it on perfectly square and didnt cross thread it... your probably fine. And dont get discouraged with DIY... this is only the start, take your time and learn from your mistakes! No problem. |

Luckily I was still under warranty and the dealer fixed it and rethreaded it for me.

Dont take every bit of advice as accurate on here. Some models (xDrive) come with a metal drain pan. |

Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the torque spec was 8nm, not 8 pounds. 8nm is roughly 70 inch-pounds. So if you torqued it to 8 foot-pounds you over torqued it quite a bit.

I guess there is my answer. I did stop once i realized something didn't feel right so hopefully nothing too bad happened. Will check the plug tonight to see if any oil is leaking from it.

It's an easy mistake to make. Don't sweat it. I would second what's been said already. Don't give up on DIY. Some growing pains are just part of the process.

I was teaching my son and he did the same exact thing. Just a bit too tight and spun it all the way around. What's the recommended repair? Nothing is leaking and i had it running for a while in my driveway.
