About Engine Oil
Hello!
My next engine oil change would have been in 10k km but when today checking vehicle status i noticed that it has changed by itself to 25k km. Did it reset settings by itself? Car is f30 2014. |

No. It use a number of attributes to calculate the estimated mileage.

I don't pay any attention to what the vehicle status says about the oil change interval. The engine doesn't have a tiny Blackstone lab hidden in the oil pan, so it doesn't know what the oil condition is. IMO choose your interval based on the best advise available and go with that. I live where it gets well below freezing in winter, so I change the oil in the spring to get rid of the crud that builds up in the cold. That translates to about 3,000 miles as that's all I drive over the course of a year. I'd feel comfortable if it was up to 10,000 miles but since I don't commute I just don't drive that much.

It uses a dielectric sensor.

The accuracy of the dielectric sensor in determining the the oil quality is better than nothing, but barely. I wouldn't trust it anymore than I trust the brake pad sensors, which is to say not at all.

Regardless of the sensor and it's perceived accuracy, I rely on a common sense conservative approach. BMW says 10K or 15K (??- nutz), I use 7500 unless my driving cycle has been unusually aggressive- then 5K. Fresh oil and filter is very cheap and easy "insurance" of a Happy Engine. Especially if you use the FCP EURO warranty program.

Where they run 2yr/18.5k mi intervals on their long life oil (e.g. VW504 / LL-04). 5k is wasting money and resources. You're going to have to look real hard on Euro car forums for a lubrication related failure owing to oil type/interval in the last 8yrs. Everything these days is related to people blowing their engines/trans with tunes. |

True, and with respect to the BMW (and every maker) recommended intervals they're not going to make them longer than they should. If anything they make them shorter. I'd still stay with a spring change in cold climates regardless of mileage. One look at the contents of an oil catch can in January should convince anyone.
