New windscreen causing 'shimmery' HUD

Hello All,

I've just had my windscreen replaced (2018 340i) at a BMW garage, and now when I look at the HUD, it looks slightly distorted/shimmery and ripples when I move my head from side to side (though the reflection brightness and sharpness seems as good as it used to be).

I specifically asked the garage for a 'genuine' BMW windscreen, and it does have the BMW logo stamped on it next to the Pilkington logo, so I'm satisfied with that (I think they used the chassis number to get the correct HUD-spec glass too).

I guess my question is, am I just being paranoid? Was it perfect before or am I just *thinking* it was? Do you guys with HUDs have any similar experiences, and are yours 'perfect' like I think mine was before?

Cheers!

Just because you got a "BMW windscreen" doesn't mean you got the correct one for the HUD, it's a different part number, are you 110% sure it's not the regular glass?

I'm not 110% sure, but they had to order-in the windscreen, and it was matched to my chassis number. As far as I can tell, the windscreen part number is: B51.31.7.258.072 (this is in the UK if that makes any difference).

That's definitely the correct one for HUD, at least according to RealOEM:

Not a clue on the shimmering effect though.

Thanks for the confirmation. Makes me feel better, but the distortion is noticeable.

Best example is when you have the circular speed limit graphic visible. While my head moves around driving the car, the circle can become slightly oval shaped when viewed through certain parts of that area of windscreen.

Am I being overly picky? Or is everyone else's HUD perfect?

Your shop should have followed the precise OEM procedure to align the HUD windshield to the HUD projector.

I think they did an ok job installation wise. My feeling is the windscreen is ever so slightly defective. I just can't remember there being any ripples in the glass where the HUD is before this new screen.

Unless I'm being too picky and actually new cars with a HUD aren't completely 100 percent ripple/distortion free.

My suggestion is to show those "ripples" to your installer and let them know that they are not supposed to be any. I have HUD and no ripples.
