my NY EZ pass got speed-suspended

Hello fellow bimmerfans.

I live and work in NJ/NY. and commute via bridges almost everyday.

Straight to the point, Has anyone gotten your EZ pass speed-suspended

and tried using other states' EZ pass during the period of suspension?

I tried applying for NJ EZ pass and it wouldn't allow me to get it cause the NJ EZ pass branch knew my EZ pass was suspended and had some penalty to resolve.

I just tried VA's and looks like process is being taken and I'll have to see how it goes.

On top of all the expensive penalties, Thinking that I have to wait in line for cash line at the toll makes it worse.

Thanks for reading it guys. Safe drive!

But, but... when the government started EZpass, they said it would only be used for toll collection, no tracking of any sort.
Gee, the government lied to us!

Murf

No EZtrack, no cellphone tracking device.

Maybe the recent 'electronic privacy' movement will help.
I was going to get EZtrack, but the Gov want access to my bank account for that.

ezpass can suspend your account for going to fast through tolls or going between two stations faster than they recommend. I dont think this has anything to do with the state. you cant just go get another ezpass and start another account?

This is what scares me. With the increase of 'readers', soon they can just mail speeding tickets to us like red light tickets.
They might have to lay off all those tax-collectors-in-a-cute-uniform I see on the parkways.

This a NY thing, and I'm informing you as someone who deals with PA, NJ, NY, DE, MD, DC, VA, and NC ezpass.

It gets better in NYC on the local streets they install ez pass reader to detect people movement inside the city not on a toll road

It is then added to a database in the event there is an amber alert or stolen vehicle or some other issue they are able to pull up the plate number in a query and see the last known location of the vehicle.

Well yes, that's the good part.
They are now collecting this time-stamped data. How are they going to use this data in the future? Maybe we should ask Facebook, etc.

i cant imagine they keep it forever or access it much. mostly just the last spotting of a plate. everything else is stored in probably cold storage and only accessed when a case requires it.

i dont need to worry about it since im not hiding anything or have a tinfoil hat on

This is a hotly debated topic among data security and privacy professionals. Reason being is there are no standards for how long the data can be stored, how it can be shared/used and by whom. Not all plate readers belong to your state or local government. Plenty are operated by private firms who maintain large databases for their own uses, and share the information with law enforcement and other agencies.

And while you may not have anything to hide, it does open the opportunity to collect way more about who you are and where you go especially when you bring other data sources into the mix. Do you frequent a particular liquor store or bar? Maybe you visit a shrink on a weekly basis. Why do you go to a certain woman's house on the way home from work a couple nights a week?

Some of that might sound "tinfoil hat", and who knows if there's anyone actually using the information in that way, but the fact that there's really no oversight like I mentioned above is somewhat concerning.
