drivetrain malfunction

so after all the unforunate things that have happened to this car since ive owned it im now greeted with a drivetrain malfunction, it haapened when i pulled off the motorway and setting off from the lights the car spluttered. then after a few mins it cleared. it then happened again 10 minutes later and cleared again after a few mins.

booked it into bnw next wednesday. i wrote a previous post about my first turbo sounding a bit whiry and loud and i think this could be the culprit, saying that it could be 1 of a billion possible electrical faults on this car.

will be luck ever change! i was very close to ordering the steinbaeur module but now this has happened ive been promted to deffinatly wait untill warrenty is up *over 2 years* (sad face)

This symptom was discussed before and happened for 330ds of couple of members and it ended up needing new EGR valves. This is the link

I'll put money (well at least a pound as I live in Yorkshire) on that it will be an EGR valve faulty !

I had the drivetrain malfunction fault come up for about 20 seconds on Saturday while driving through the Blackwall tunnel, I did get a squeaky bum!

Hasn't happened since though.

It's happened on my last 2 BMW's within the first 2 months of ownership. Both times I switched off to reset and it never came back!!!

Put it down to newness

just sat here wondering how long the egr was actually faulty for and what it was causing the engine to do. i thought the car was fast when i purchased it. but since theyve replace the egr it is an absolute animal.

That's why the first thing to go once the warranty is out is the EGR coding. I know it's for emissions but does it really make sense to put the exhaust fumes back into the inlet manifold. Old cars where easy to blank, new ones have got clever!!
I think that is the main fuel saving step when cars are mapped.

Hello Everyone - Well, I hit the DriveTrain Malfunction error, but mine happened while the car was in my garage, following my disconnecting the battery negative terminal for a quick audio amp wiring check. Note: I’ve done this several times with no issues, but this time the negative terminal was disconnected for only 20 seconds.

When I put the negative terminal back on, got the DTM error. Also, got a Brake System error, and Fuel System error. FML. CAR WILL NOT START.

So I am suspecting this is just electrical, like the sensor “bricked” based on a short time power disconnect or something.

Is there a procedure to reset all these error codes? OBD connection / tool?

Many thanks.

I would certainly start with clearing the error codes with bimmerlink or similar and an OBD dongle.

Consider disconnecting the battery for a longer period to reset everything. I believe in 20s that things may have got out of sync. Just a guess, based on you not having issues disconneting before.

There's an app called Deep OBD on Android that's gets you detailed access to pretty much all the modules - much better than the usual DTC apps. I used it to clear the airbag light when I disturbed the system installing my dashcam.

It's a really powerful tool but be warned it's not user friendly so you'd need to do a bit of reading before using. Really good when you get the hang of it though.
