It appears that recent iPhones can be rendered useless by simply changing the date to..

January 1 1970

A flaw in the mighty Fruit? Surely not!

From reading around on reddit and places it does brick it, but only temporarily. If you let the battery drain completely it resets itself correctly.

Some'at to do with time stamps and security certificates and the like failing if it is out of whack. Presumably draining the CMOS battery reverts the internal time to a default?

Apple is definitely open to shit like this. Last year there was a story about sending a certain text message to an iPhone and it would screw it up. I did it to a few friends /coworkers

But surely that is illegal under European competition laws? In the same way one of the specific requirements of the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations (put in place to allow the auto trade to maintain some anti-competitive practices) is that technical data and repair instructions should be made available to the independent motor trade (for which manufacturers could make a reasonable charge) so that car owners were not obliged to take their car to a franchised dealer for service or repair.

I bet apple have it somewhere in the small print that 'you don't actually own the phone, that money you paid was for apple to grant you rights to use their device, but it still belongs to apple inc.'
