LL14+ or LL04. I wouldn't go out of OEM spec.

But here we are, running tunes out of OEM spec. Gapping spark plugs, etc. Why wouldn't we upgrade the oil we use to match our new power levels?

LL-04 (2005). API SN. ACEA C3 (similar to A3). SAE 5W30, 5W40. The LL-04 oils have been greatly misunderstood in the past but this is now in greater demand. Most LL-04 oils are intended for Diesels, although it was also approved for gas engines in Europe and other world markets. BMW never certified LL-04 for the US (see next paragraph). Diesel oil has long been valued by engine builders and tuners because of its higher levels of ZDDP and higher HTHS ratings, both are excellent indicators of engine protection at higher temperatures. LL-04 also has a lower SAPS value which is good news for direct-injection engines (all BMW turbo engines since 2007). You won't find Genuine BMW LL-04 sold here but Red Line Euro-Series oil is produced around this standard.

As part of the efforts to make engine oil more environmentally friendly, the US EPA required ZDDP levels to be reduced in gasoline oil. However, Diesel oil was exempt from this ZDDP reduction. BMW never certified LL-04 for the US market because a) there weren't many Diesels for sale here, b) it was incompatible with the high amounts of sulfur and Ethanol in US fuel. However, since 2014 our gasoline more closely matches European formulas and interest in LL-04 has increased. LL-04 and LL-01 are interchangeable/compatible but LL-04 is preferred for its higher ZDDP and low SAPS."

I think we're agreeing here. Sounds like LL-04 can be had in 5W-40 diesel oil spec but works for gas engines. It has higher ZDDP and is low ash. Rotella T6 and others have these same properties, just a bit cheaper.

0w30 LL04. A step up from the 0w20 LL14+ for sure. I don't think I'll run heavier weight.

It's not just about weight either. It's about heat. Our cars run much hotter than my previous cars, and they all ran 30w and 40w. i always heard bmw engines ran upwards of 60w, so was surprised to see 20w being an offering.

Thanks

As i read most of you think it is at good way to go with ll-04 castrol 0-30 especially (j1980mac - G.Newt). Better than 0-20 BMW ll-14

As mentioned i am running in EU . end from my link it seems that BMW says ok for this.https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...engine/1PSryV8

I am planning to go for BM3 in the future stage1.

Running to italy Next week 2000 miles with high speed 150-200 km/t for long periode of time. and i dont wont to mess up my warranty yet.

Lol don't go off of my recommendation. I'm not a mechanical engineer. I don't know anything about oils other than I don't wish to stray too far away from OEM.

When I was referencing LL04, what I really meant was LL01 (my oversight).

LL01 and LL14+ are BMW approved oils for the B58 according to my X3 M40i manual.

I don't know that LL04 would be a good thing (or not) for our engines.

Walmart pennzoil 0w20 ultra platinum will work? I honestly do not see any indication of LL-01 or LL-14 on any bottles here.

What off the shelf can I grab in the Pacific northwest? I want to do my own oil change in between the yearly/10k intervals.

I was also told by a master bmw tech at the dealer that it's good to use 0w40 Mobil 1 if you're heavy footed and he said spirited drivers can stick to 0w30. He didn't recommend 0w20 unless you drive like a grandpa 90% of the time.

Planning doing my own oil change in between the dealership warranty oil change 10k/year system. Are most liking the 0w30 over 0w20 for our b58?
On the east coast Walmart sells Castrol European Formula 0W-40 in a big black 5 quart jug for $25 and also similar one quart bottles for $8. You will see the BMW LL-01 in tiny type on the back. I buy several Mann oil filter kits with the two o-rings and metal washer for <$9 on Amazon or whenever I spot a good price.

Anyone know what brand and weight the dealerships use as a default for mid-atlantic area where there's no harsh winters?

Call a couple dealers and ask what spec oil they use. It doesn't mean that it's the best solution for your climate. I wouldn't be surprised if their motivation is to use the cheapest priced BMW oil that they can buy in bulk. They know just about any oil will get the engine to its end of warranty.

I used that kit for my third change at 28k. Didn’t feel like going back to stock for a “free” dealer oil change. Looking at the receipts for the first two changes they did, they used that same oil. I’m at 36k now and am going to change it this week with Redline 0W 30. Jeg’s had it on sale for around $9 a qt, When it’s normally $12.50. I picked up 15 qts for the next two changes.

Just ordered the Valvoline 5w40 diesel. Ha

Based on a bunch of reading it seems like a good idea. We'll see. I may not run it in the winter but even then it looks safe to run.
