Anyone else take their bimmer out in the dirt?
I can't be the only one, I know I'm probably a rare breed but who else has any dirt road road fun?

I've had this F30 for about a year & a half, & have gotten it stuck in mud, & snow.
Both times going down 'un-maintained' roads to get closer to a hiking trailhead. I be bad. Murf **Rear Wheel Drive Last edited by Littlebear; 02-16-2019 at 08:50 AM.. |

Xdrive or just rwd? I haven't taken mine into those extreme of conditions but I have hit some pretty loose sand going uphill and haven't gotten stuck. *fingers crossed*

This was the best pic I found for this thread in my phone.
Not my current F31, but a few cars back. |

I used to drive my E46 330i down a couple miles of dirt/gravel road to take my daughter to her horseback riding lessons. Can’t say it was much fun, and the sound of gravel pinging off the car always made me cringe thinking of the paint chips. That drive was always better in the X5 than the 330i.

I kept my subie so this would NEVER happen, then last week I took the BMW out on the lake ice fishing.

My car has only 2k miles and hasn't been much of anywhere, but my previous F32 was on some mild dirt and gravel roads. The ground clearance isn't good enough to go to anything really rough. The white car was good at showing a nice coat of dirt. The xdrive does a good job with the traction, even with the high-speed tires

Not my F32, but the E70 gets dirty. After this trip, the entire skid plate was caked with mud glad i didn't lower it like i originally wanted to.

The GPS in my car is totally f'ing insane. It's taken me on gravel roads multiple times -- the worst one was probably about 20 miles long. I was starting to lose my mind. Luckily I had the rocker panels covered in clear-bra. But boy, did they take a beating.
Here's the dirtiest my car has gotten though... after a 6 hour trip up to the mountain and back -- on HEAVILY sanded and graveled roads. It's "platinum silver metallic" (brown), so the pic doesn't do it justice. This was really hard on the car -- especially the paint. I think they used chemicals too, because the stuff was just caked on -- even after car washes the paint had lost its luster. Anyway, tiny rocks and sand were jammed everywhere, even under the hood -- and rocks got lodged in the brakes -- multiple times. I had to stop because the brakes were making a god-awful sound -- I thought something on the car had gone terribly, terribly, wrong -- and in the middle of nowhere, too. But after a few quick reversals, the rocks came out. Glad I figured that out! Between the mountain and the long gravel roads, the clear bra at the leading edge of rocker panels has completely wore through -- and now I need to get it re-done. |

No no no. High speed-good. Corners? Sure. Dirt/Gravel/Snow/mud? Oh hell no. If i lived in snow area, the car would stay in the garage and I'd have a beater. No way i beat on a Bimmer. Hell, I don't want to drive it in the rain which we have been getting......

in december, google maps led me down a paved highway onto a dirt / gravel road in remote southern new mexico. according to the map there was a road 10 miles further that i wrongly assumed was paved. the road went from gravel to rock - not golfball sized rock but softball sized rock. in some sections i was driving 3 mph over rocks and thought i may not make it. of course no cell service.
about 80 miles later i found pavement. i wanted to cry. lesson learned: if you ever think maybe you should turn around and double back, ... yes, you should. amazingly no damage to my 340. and i had a full size spare, jack and wrench with me too, and plenty of water. would have been a looooong hike out. |
