Are BMW cutting corners with auto dimming mirrors?

Hi All,

I love my 2016 f33, but just a niggle.

Why on earth is the passenger mirror not auto dimming, I've checked the mirror and the glass is standard.

Looks crap when when driving at night and the mirrors are different colour.

Is this cost cutting??

If you have the auto dimming option, both are dimming. If you pop the mirror out, you should have a connection for auto dimming and one for heating.

Both of my exterior mirrors dim with the rearview. Maybe one of yours is inoperable.

In my experience the side mirrors don't dim that much. However maybe the passenger connection has come loose?

Yes, I agree my f20 did but the mirror on the passenger side does not have the dimming border.

On my E93 M3 had a thin film applied to both sides mirrors and you could tell the difference at night, can't see it on my F30.

I just read this in another BMW forum, perhaps they started earlier on UK models?

BMW is stripping the automatic dimming passenger mirror feature from may 2017 models. BMW did not justify why the feature is being removed for 2017 or if there was going to be a price adjustment for Option Code 430.

The automatic dimming function will continue to be operational on the driver’s side mirror and rear view mirror.

Affected 2017 BMW Models

F22 (2-Series Coupe) from March 2016 production
F23 (2-Series Convertible) from March 2016 production
F48 (X1) from March 2016 production
F15 (X5) from April 2016 production

For MY2016 Canadian production, 'Auto-dimming exterior mirrors' are part of the Premium Essential Package. Option packages vary from one county to another.
Perhaps in the case of UK production, only the driver's side dimming mirror is standard while the other side is a stand alone option or part of a package ?

'17s are officially being produced without the passenger side mirror having auto dim feature. Deleting previously standard features is the textbook definition of cost cutting.

Yeah, BMW is notorious for decontenting their vehicles.

On the one hand, you're damned if you take a chance with first model year before they get all of the bugs get worked out.

On the other hand, you might get a more reliable car but with less content if you wait later until the LCI.

My 2 E92's were as different as night and day with features that got eliminated from the first one.

I wouldn't mind so much if they justified it due to safety but so far nothing.
I'm curious to know if a LHD model mirror would work as a dimming passenger mirror.

Huh, usually BMW switches more features from optional to standard as the model cycle progresses with most of the bump in LCI. That's why I always prefer to get a post-LCI model myself. I didn't know they removed content in the E90xx models.

Removing auto-dimming from the passenger side mirror this late in the model cycle is really a head-scratcher. They must be really desperate to shave a few bucks off each car while crossing their fingers that owners won't notice and be annoyed.

Where did you find this info? This is pretty sad. And it cannot be added with the premium package?

from E9x off the top of my head, they took away:
Rest Feature (okay they did replace with sync, but I really like residual heat)
under Hood insulation
Nets on both back seats
cover on ashtray (which looked really crappy in comparison)
Standard HK on 335
and a whole bunch of other little stupid things that were my first E92.

Just like now with the mirror, they started eliminating things before the LSI model came out, so by the time they released the LCI with all the missing parts in conjunction with the new refreshed bits, most didn't even notice.

You don't want to do that. You would much rather have a convex passenger mirror than an auto-dimming regular passenger mirror.
