640d GC would you?
Ok,
335d barge goes away in the next six months and there’s nothing that takes my fancy. Fancy something diffferent that can knock out 25k a year, four doors and is reasonable on costs. 30k budget and look to get back a reasonable amount of that after two years when I chop it in for something boring, ie, electric. Any other suggestions welcome.

Had a fair few 5’s and e classes, just itching for something different. Nothing wrong with 530d g30 by the way.

Love my 640i, interior is a lovely place to be. Took me a while to find a petrol sport with all the desired toys and options, but if you're after a diesel, should be tonnes to choose from.

I have a 640d GC, it replaced a 530 GT.
The 6 GC is an epic car, great all rounder and the interior is a special place to be (leather dash etc). I do need to question your need for 4 doors as the only downside for such a long car is that the rear space / legroom is extremely poor (although coming from a 5GT that was always going to be an issue I guess!). We use my wife’s F30 for most journeys with the family as it’s more spacious in the rear for the kids! I need to replace mine shortly and it’s a tough car to replace but sadly my kids are getting too tall for it now. As for getting most of your money back, the depreciation on them is quite savage sadly, especially if you are piling on the miles. IIRC mine was close to £70k new, it’s a June 2014 car that I bought in 2016 as an AUC with under 5k miles for around £35k, looking around on AutoTrader my car would now fetch about £24k, so that’s a pretty steep loss There seem to be loads of low mileage ones out there! In terms of spec look for the M Sport Plus Package, gives HUD, sunroof, HK sound and 20” alloys. Post 2015 they all have LED headlights as standard. Give me a shout if you’d like to know any more. |

My missus has a 530dGT..... 😂
To be fair, the depreciation thing affects most of not all the larger BMW's. Seems to get worse the higher up series numbers you get. 7s are the worst. The 630dGT we've had for the last month and half as a loaner whilst the 530dGT is on for the egr debacle, is an 18 plate, that's a £70k car, has 14k miles on it and it's up for sale as approved used for £34k. Hoping the new 8 series follows suit! 😂 😂 Last edited by Russbmw; 02-07-2019 at 03:04 PM.. |

They’re a bit of a marmite car but a comfy / spacious place to be!
I’ve briefly considered replacing my GC with a 640i GT X Drive, although I just can’t believe what BMW have done putting the 6 series moniker on that! The 6er should always have been a special coupe. One of my all time favourite vehicles is the 635 CSi and there are elements of the F06 design that remind me of the original 6. |

Yeah, know what you mean. It's got a bigger boot than the 5gt, which is handy with kids. Picked my wife and 2 kids up last Saturday in it. 3 full size suitcases, pushchair, 2 kids seats, 3 bits of handbaggage all went in no dramas.

Is it not due for a refresh soon?
Anyhow a patient of mine has an M6 GC. Beautiful car. I would go for one but I'm drawn to x drive too much now. Unless they bring an X model out... the 640d is a little less slower than a 435d/335d but then again even with the same engine it is a heavier car. For anyone that lives on the road the interior would be very comfortable. |

Rear space is for grandkids, currently 2 and 4 so would hope ok for a couple of years. 4 or 5k a year dep seems about right on a couple of year old one.

The point I was making is that the residuals on large BMW's isn't great, I think this will get worse with what's happening around diesel at the moment. Further, doing 25k miles p.a. in any car is going to impact the future residual. Remember the OP stated the following (my emphasis highlighted with the underlining) "Fancy something diffferent that can knock out 25k a year, four doors and is reasonable on costs. 30k budget and look to get back a reasonable amount of that after two years when I chop it in..." |

I keep looking at them as a replacement for my 330d. Currently torn between 640d GC/Covertible, Maserati Ghibli or Jag XJ.
Similar brief to OP as well - 25k miles per year, reasonable running costs. Would like a more refined car than the F30 - having come from a Jag XF there is a lot of road/wind noise. |

I wish they had done the convertible with a folding hard top like the 4. A Fabric roof seems very antiquated imo.

Funnily enough, as well as an F10 M5 to replace my 640d GC I’ve also been interested in the Ghibli S as an alternative. However, the residuals on that are horrific than large BMWs! The infotainment systems are also shocking (especially if coming from iDrive), I believe the Maserati nav systems has an upgrade in 2017 but I’ve yet to see that version in person.

As it happens my used car friend has just sold a 4 year old 640d GC for 25k he'll have paid around 22k. Diesel residuals for large cars are firm as an example a Porsche cayenne diesel is a sought after thing now they don't make them anymore, it wasn't a lack of demand that stopped the sale, again referring to my friend in the trade he sells around 300 cars a year he has seen no drop off in demand for large euro 6 diesels with pricing firming up at auction. I do 30k per year so know all about the impact of driving a car on the value but that effects all cars regardless of size, if you're doing that mileage it will cost money.

True, there’s always a market for good cars and the Cayenne diesel has always been popular. It was a big decision that Porsche made when they decided to pull out of the diesel market. Although you can see why they did so, to focus on petrol & hybrids. Euro 6 is still the main thing diesel wise.
Not sure where your trade mate is based but I heard that Euro 5 cars are taking a hit in Central London because of the forthcoming changes to the ULEZ in April 2019. However, for those doing such high mileages, or not needing to drive or park within the C/T charge area then diesel still seems like the natural choice.
