What do you pay for your oil change? F3X

Before you crucify me for NOT changing my own oil, I don't care. I don't want to. I'm not really looking for "Free" from the people who do it themselves or are under warranty.

I have a 2015 428i xDrive Coupe with only about 28k miles on it. I bought it about 2k miles ago and I'm thinking it's time to do oil just to be safe. With something as sensitive as the engine oil, I feel much better letting a BMW dealer or mechanic do it for me.

After looking at a few estimates, they have ranged from $80 to $300... not joking.

I contacted a BMW dealer I used to work with a lot with my last car, Jake Sweeny BMW / BMW of Cincinnati North. In my opinion, they do really reasonable oil changes — starting at $89.99 for 20i's, $99.99 for 28i and 35i, etc.

So I'm curious, IF you have your oil done at a dealer or mechanic, how much does it cost you? This doesn't apply if you're under warranty... I know you don't care. Yet. Also, is $99 a reasonable price for a 428i oil change?

Thanks

yes i would say $99 is a good price. if you are DIY ing it would cost about $80 US for just the oil and filter (or thats what i used to pay for them).

$99 from dealer, not bad since Canadian dealer wanted to charge me $200 CAD. However I can get it done locally from an indy for $95 cash, so I would suggest you look at a local indy if you can. It's an oil change... I would imagine that any mechanic should be able to do that for you.

The six cylinder kits come with 7 liters instead of 5. Of course they cost more.

$99 is well within the territory to let the dealer perform the oil change.

at the dealer i regularly pay $79+ tax.
One dealer charges only $59+ tax and prides themselves on it.But theyre 1 hour away and i have to pay 17 in tolls one way to get there so not worth it unless im in the area AND need an oil change.

I don't pay to have someone change my oil, but why do you say that? Changing oil is just about the simplest task anyone could do on the car. I'm not saying you should do it, but ANY reputable shop can do it.

That said, most dealerships use the oil change as a loss leader. Considering labor usually costs about $125/hr and you're consuming about $40-$70 worth of parts, any shop that does it for less than $100 is not making money and probably losing money. They use it to bring you in and check your car for other stuff. So yeah, if you can find a dealership that will do it for only $99 or less, and you can't do it yourself, that's definitely a great deal.

The only reason I do it myself is because it saves a ton of time and buys me peace of mind. You hear horror stories of dealerships forgetting to fill the engine with oil. I guarantee you shops forget to replace your oil filter or engine oil a lot more than you think. Who actually checks to make sure they got new oil and a new filter? No one that needs to go in to get an oil change.

True -- I'm not saying it's cheap. But I would rather use OEM parts and oil, not to mention it's very convenient to drop it off and run some errands while they're working.

That's a great price. There's quite a few dealerships near me, but my closest two are dumbasses and I wouldn't trust them with my car. Bad repair stories...

59 is great, that's basically at-cost.

I've had bad experiences with local indy mechanics who SAY they work on BMW, but in reality, don't know how to do something as simple as this. Either I get a call an hour later that they don't have the filter in stock, or use the completely wrong oil to begin with.

It's more convenient for me to have someone else do it. Being able to drop your car off, them give you another one, and being able to go run some errands or get lunch is ridiculously convenient. It's worth the extra $20 I am paying them for labor and a free car wash, in my opinion...

I got a 328d so $60-70 for oil on fcp euro, wish it didn't require LL04, walmart doesn't carry a single LL04 certified oil, or the filter. Dealership quotes about $150

My 2011 328i runs $99.95 but I've seem to been lucky enough to always have a coupon to offset the price. Last time around my oil change ran me 10 cans of food for the dealerships annual Christmas Food Drive.

I have done a lot to my car myself, installed coil overs, BMW Performance Exhaust, oil filter housing gasket, belt tensioner and a few others. But I always have the dealership change my oil. Any fluid maintenance for that matter. I just had all my fluids changed, transmission, rear differential, coolant, and brakes. I just hit 100k and I'd like to have this car for a little longer.

Potentially saving for an M4 plus trade so I need it to look good on paper. Buyers love lots of maintenance records from the dealership and it translates to better resale value.

If you say so.

I've always gotten a better read by talking to the owner and understanding their fundamental car knowledge and gauging how well they've taken care of all aspects of the car. I'd rather buy from a true enthusiast who has done all his own work with receipts for parts than from someone who has a stack of dealership receipts post warranty, and doesn't care if some flunkie at the dealership is changing his oil. And with all the $59 and $69 oil change "specials", who knows what some of these dealerships are pumping into your crankcase.

Nice 328, BTW.

Sadly you don't meet the owner when buying CPO or from any dealership, but what does show to the new buyer is all maintenance history on carfax, which is what I look for and have always done when buying a vehicle from a dealership.

Yes, that's really good! My local dealership runs a special every so often, but I haven't seen anything major lately.
What is the price without coupon?

Castrol Syntec 0W-40 Euro is LL04 certified and usually on sale at Wally World for less than $40 for a 5QT. Get the filter at the dealership for less than $20 after the BMWCCA discount and it comes with the correct o-rings and drain plug. After a year of oil changes the discount pretty much pays for the membership.
