440/B58 ... Screaming?

Hi all - really weird one here. My SO has a 440 with about 40k miles on it.

Recently we've had to adjust our parking situation which now requires backing in, and that isn't going so well. So I say leave it and I will do it.

Today my SO went to put the car in park so I could back it in, but instead had a random thought and turned the engine off, then within 2 seconds or so pressed it again and it turned back on.

The vehicle started .. I dunno, screaming/screaching, high pitch loud sound for several seconds while we both thought what the f___ is that sound, only realizing its the car. White smoke started pumping out of the exhaust.

Immediately turned it off, popped the hood, nothing smoking in there, nothing weird. Waited a few minutes, turned it back on, some residual oil burn off, but it seems fine now.

Checked codes with bimmerlink and there are no DME/engine errors/issues being reported (some random module errors which I cleared; radio/alarm/interior light).

Any ideas? I have no idea what could have possibly happened with a very quick on-off. Certainly a first.

*** Edit *** Found this, this is exactly what it sounded like:

Will replace PCV diaphgragm and go from there.

PCV might be fine. For whatever reason sometimes when you stop and immediately start the engine again the pcv doesn't seal even though it isn't torn

I just had the same thing happen. Turned the car off, didn't realize my foot was on the pedal and restarted it and I have the start-up roar turned on. Crazy squealing, white smoke. PVC diaphragm had about a 1/4" tear in it. Luckily it's a $12 part and takes less than 5 minutes to change.

And PCV has an "extended warranty" as BMW knows it is prone to failure. Dealer should change it for free.

Closest dealer to me is about 20 minutes away. Not worth the drive and wait there for such a cheap part that is so easy to change. Not to mention the risk of them touching my ECU. Amazon, $12 next day delivery
