HELP: F30/F32 340i/440i - Which one

Hey, forum users. I've been looking at a 340i Sedan or 440i Coupe (MY17) to replace my outgoing E92 335i. The 340i is more family friendly and allows me to put the boys in the back, so a sedan would be a nice change of pace. But the 440i appeals to me because I'm more of a coupe guy.

So the question is: Even though it's a matter of personal preference, what are all of the quirks and features of each model that would make me pick one over the other?

I had the 2017 440 coupe and I loved the look. I didn't like the long doors. Living in a big city means diagonal parking and the doors make access difficult. I also park in a narrow driveway with walls on both sides which has the same problem. My wife has mobility problems and the doors and the lack of the grab handle in the roof of the coupe meant she couldn't deal with it at all so I was forced to trade it in after just under 2 years. I ordered a 340 the last month of production to get the 6MT. The sedan drives and feels the same, except I bought the adaptive suspension on the sedan, which I like a lot.

If you like the coupe-looks but also want practicality, then get the Grand Coupe F36. I've got one and couldn't think of anything that I dislike about it.

There is no right or wrong really. It sounds like an F36 Gran Coupe would give you the best of both worlds....

Go test-drive both a 3 Series and a 4 GC and see which one you like better. For me it was crystal clear after 30 seconds. They are similar, but sooooo different at the same time.

I keep vividly remembering a statement I read somewhere, which diplomatically summarises it all....:

... "The 4 Series is what the 3 Series should have been to start with" ...

Four doors with kids makes life much easier.

Also, it used to be that the sedan was the most stable platform because of the b-pillar. Not sure you'd notice it at all but at limits you'd rarely see.

I needed four doors even though my kids are launched--gf has a dog...so getting its 'hammock' in the back seat is also a lot easier.

My first coupe and I will never not have one after this. I have 2 kids, 2yo and 10mo old and I bring them everywhere. It's not easy but manageable, and the coupe looks and dynamics are so much nicer. In stock form the car is lower, wider, stiffer and has a better presence than the sedan.

The only downside for me is that, if you're looking for used parts, there are way less options for F32 since so many more people buy F30s. Took me forever to find a deal on a used diffuser. Also it is slightly heavier than the F30 due to the extra structural components.

I just bought a 440 coupe and love it, the backseat space is big, getting in and out might be a hassle but who cares about a few second. F36 GC might be what you are looking for, but the two door is a way better choice for me.

With the boys 340 would make sense.

At the end of the day it is of course your call. I needed 4 doors and thus it was always a choice between a 340 and 4 grad coupe. I guess I liked the 340 because I previously had an E46 330 for 16 years and just got used to the look and feel. I have no regrets. I was able to get mine just the way I wanted it and in almost the same silver that my e46 was found in....maybe that one demand from my wife put the 340 over the top????? I do like the grand coupe and would have been just as happy.

Had a 2016 340i and loved it, now have a 2019 440i and love it even more, so for me, coupe wins, but at the end of the day, each to their own and people's needs vary a lot, but I would sooner struggle a bit with doors than go back to the 340.
Probably getting it custom flash tuned like I did with the 340 in a month or two.

You could use black plasti-dip, you spray it on, certainly seen matte black, not sure about gloss, you just spray it on it's pretty magic stuff and if you don't like it you can just peel it off and then if you end up deleting the badge just get some floss.

2017 440i is pre-LCI, from 2018 onward you'll get the LED head and taillights.

That's a good point that I always forget. For 2017 it makes sense to get the 340i to get the better headlights/tail lights, idrive, etc. My 440i is a 2018 so has all the LCI parts that made it an easy decision.
