340i -- Can't fill the gas tank?

So this issue is a new one to me. As the title suggests, I can't put gas in the car. I've got a 2018 manual 340i RWD. I bought this car about 3 weeks ago, since then I was able to put gas in the car once no problem. Now, my second time getting gas...the car is low on gas, I go to fill it and it will pump for maybe $3.00 worth of gas and then cut off. I have tried multiple gas stations with the same result. The car is under warranty and I'll bring it in on Monday, but in the meantime, anyone know what this is?

Normally means bad charcoal canister or filler neck.

Typically this issue has been caused by a bad tank vent valve. It's pretty common and there are multiple posts on it. Other symptoms are erratic idle for a few minutes after filling up the tank completely. Most of the time the CEL doesn't appear so it can be hard to diagnose.
In regards to the filler neck and canister mentioned above, those are possibilities but not as likely. The vent valve has proven to be a common issue on the b58 as the mileage on them increase. Super simple to swap in too

If it’s the tank vent valve here’s a YouTube replacement video

Looks super easy.

I own a CPO 2016 340i and see mine was replaced at least once, if not twice during the first 30k miles under the previous owner. Seems like it's not uncommon.

Amazing! Thank you guys for your responses, it's really appreciated. Luckily the car is under warranty so no need to self-repair, but I will definitely tell the SA when I drop the car off. Good looks folks.

Sounds like you've found your answer. In case you haven't, this might sound dumb, but maybe try playing around with how you insert the gas nozzle into your car. (i.e. do you insert it all the way in, then leave it hanging while it automatically fills. Or do you keep holding it the entire time. Maybe don't insert the nozzle fully in or else it will prematurely stop for some reason. Try changing the angle you put it in to change how the gas flows in, etc.)

I get this issue when the fuel tank is really really low. If I fill up before the low fuel light comes up then it's all good and well. Now to be safe I always fill up around the quarter tank mark and it's been 100% trouble free.

Try that next time. Good luck.

I had the same problem with my 2020 M240. The nozzle would keep clicking off after a small amount of gas pumped

The dealer finally found that the hose in the filling tube had a bulge inside of it

Replaced under warranty and have not have any problems since

Does anyone know if replacing the charcoal canister is a DIY job that can be easily accessed or do you have to drop the fuel tank?

#1 in this parts diagram for my 2014 320i Xdrive:

I'm currently having this issue, I have replaced the tank vent valve, no codes, but there is definitely pressure not escaping my tank; I can hear it building too quickly when I'm filling up. Did anybody else find any solutions? New charcoal canister? Filler neck? dirt filter?

Happens at all gas stations, or a particular one? One of the stations I go to have higher flows from the nozzle, with a hyper-sensitive kick off. I need to slowly nurse it to fill the tank or it just perpetually kicks off. The other station I typically use, I just lock it full open and wait until it's done.

ironically, the e85 pump I use regularly is super slow and does not click off, but at all the stations I've been to for 93 it does it. Sometimes I'll fill it super slowly like you said, or just a gallon or so at a time. Thats why I'm wondering if it's the filler pipe or vent. I can hear the pressure build-up, it's definitely just not venting fast enough.

Im at 25000 miles btw. My drive way is like 1/4 mile dirt.

Was this difficult? Easily accessible?

I have same problem on 2019 430 can’t fill tank except very very slowly but no codes, could the vent be bad without codes being thrown?

it was easy, just a little frustrating for a few minutes. Remove half the wheel well liner bolts/nuts, remove the shield right behind the passenger rear jack point(i think it was two small plastic torx screws), disconnect the old and reinstall the new. The frustrating part was snakes out the old and new vent line, but i got it in, just try to be careful the line can kink
