Why not just go with 225 front 255 rear? 235 on 8.5j will leave your rim exposed to the evil curbmonster.

On my old e90 335xi which came with a staggered setup I ran squared 225 all around winters on them. No issue over the 16 years I had the car. Had a separate set for summers and use the factor rims for winter. The narrower the tire the better for winter to cut through the slush and crap.

You should be in pretty good shape with that setup. From experience I can tell you 225s will be too narrow on the rear. 235s will be narrow enough for winter.

Input your wheel/tire specs through this wheel/tire size calculator to see how far off the front axle will be from the rear axle with your square tire set on a staggered wheel set: www.willtheyfit.com

You will need:
  • tire width
  • tire aspect ratio (profile)
  • tire diameter
  • Wheel width
  • wheel offset

As long as he has the same aspect ratio all around in this case there won’t be any difference. The only thing we’re talking about here is tire width. Of course, he does need to choose an appropriate aspect ratio that keeps the circumference and revolutions per mile close to the factory tires to keep the speedometer close to the correct reading.

Not sure why you’d want to put square winter tires on staggered wheels? You lose the ability to rotate square tires front to back.

Is your car an XDrive? Why not get the standard staggered sizes in your winter tires, so Front 225/45-18 and Rear 255/40-18.

My area winters get 2-4 inches of snow and roads are plowed fairly soon. Bigger danger from Black Ice. I’ve got Michelin X-Ice SNOW winter tires which are perfect for these conditions.

If you live in an area with higher snowfall, unplowed mountain roads etc then you may want to consider Blizzak WS90’s.

better off doing a staggered setup.

i.e. 225/45 and 255/40

Yeah bro, square tires on staggered wheels is just plain dumb. Those 2cm (7.8%) narrower tires in the back ain't gon save your ass once it's slip-n-slide time. Also, your tires in the front would be wider than stock, so what is up with that?? Just go with the stock-a-lock & rock some 225s in front and them 255s in the back, can't mess with that!!
