People with 405 M wheels : good or bad experience?

Hi all,

So after posting a thread about the subject I got a good price on a 2018 340i M Performance Edition, I'll probably pick it up Friday.

It'll be my first car with 20" wheels.
My wife had a 2013 335i with the 19" wheels and only got 2 sidewall bubbles in 3 years, which is good IMO (compared to the C43, which has the stiffest suspension ever).

I drive very carefully to avoid potholes but I've seen some bubbles appear out of nowhere, when people didn't recall hitting anything.

My question is : those who have the 405 M wheels with the RFT... are you surviving?

(In case anyone's wondering I'll have the OEM dedicated winter 18" tires/wheels so winter is not an issue)

Congrats on deciding to get the 2018 M Perf Edition. You will not be disappointed.

I have had mine for only 6 weeks so can't really comment on the 20" 405M wheels. My previous 340 had 19" wheels, and I don't think the 20s feel much different from the 19s. Like you, I will be running 18" winters.

I actually think the 2018 rides better on the 20s with the Pirelli P Zero tires then my previous 340 did on the 19s with Bridgestones. The Pirellis are a better tire.

Enjoy your new ride!!

I have a similar setup. I had a 2015 335i with 624m wheels and Pirelli RFT. I find the ride was pretty harsh in that car. My 2018 340i xdrive with 405m and RFT feels a lot better and forgiving going over rough roads. The 335i had THP but the 340i doesn't and I'm not sure if the fact that the 340 has xdrive explains why the ride feels a little smoother. I'm probably comparing apples to oranges here but so far I'm enjoying the ride much better this time around. I'll put my 400m wheels with nonRFT winter tires on in November and I expect the ride to be even better on rough roads. To sum it up, if you're accustomed to 20 inch wheels the difference will be felt based on your suspension. If you're not accustomed to 20s, you might hate it altogether. Just my experience.

Hi Guys. I too am considering a 340i mpe. I'd be interested in knowing the good price you got to gauge where my negotiations sit. Unless that's too personal. And my brother in law has told me not to get 20" rf's

So knowing what you plan to use for your non winter tires would be appreciated.
Thanks

It's probably the Xdrive suspension compared to rwd lowered by 10mm with adaptive. Xdrive has the softest suspension

I also have a 340 MPE which I picked up in late April. I have put 9k kms on it so far, and the 20" have been really good. They are forged rims, but I am still really careful over bumps or anything.

The car is beautiful, and makes all the right noises

With good roads the 405M 20" on non-RFT are a great, and they look good.

Over the past 5 years all of my four 405M got scratches. I'm almost a pro in fixing them

There is just not much rubber between alloy and road. 1/2 inch less then with 19" to be precise.

The risk of getting scratches is naturally higher as with 18" or 19".
But hey, that's the price for a smile on my face looking at a wheel I like.
If you are willing to pay that price/risk then do it. If not, get a smaller wheel.
