Warning over speed limit

For the first time today, my 340i with Speed Limit display thingy, HUD and Pro Media, flashed and chimed at me that I was over the speed limit. Its never done that before .. in 2 years of ownership.

Speed Limiter was on at 40mph, and I was in a 40mph zone. However, due to going downhill, the car made it to 44mph, followed by a constant chime, the word "limit" flashing on the dash, and HUD, and "Max limit" or something flashing in the HUD.

What are the trigger points for this ? I tried to repeat it by setting the limiter to 60 in a 70, and going 70mph - but it did not happen again.

Anyone know how this works ?

I imagine it's warning you that it is not able to respect the speed value you set (no brake function on the limiter). It has nothing to do with SLD.

It will only do this if you're not the one making the car go faster deliberately (i.e. using the throttle).

Was you on eco pro mode?
I can get mine to do this very easily by doing the speed limit going past a junction that most people use that takes the road from 70 to 30. It flashes telling me this.

I don't have speed sign detection so it shows the car knows all the time but it's coded to not show you which sucks

+1 to this. If you aren't the one pushing the throttle and the car speeds up from a descent, it will warn you.

Good safety feature. I would assume this would come in handy if you were towing something.

You can also set the general speed warning in the iDrive as well of course...

What year Vehicle?

In my 2013 with NBT, one can only set it at a certain speed, say 40 MPH when I was in a 30.

It goes off remains warning at 40+ even if I am in a 70 MPH.

I think it’s ridiculous that it will not warn on +10 MPH of the current speed limit instead of always at 40 MPH as the system knows the speed where I am at.
