X40i engine - miles from a full tank
Hi all - Just interested in what you sort of miles you guys are getting from a tank on average runs with the x40 lump - just about to finish my first tank on about 300 miles with my 440i gc - I know people will say you don’t buy this car to worry about mpg but am curious as to what i should expect - Cheers in advance

It's very dependent on what sort of driving you do. My last fill up was a shade over 500 miles on a tank - but this is mainly made up of my commute over average speed motorway roadworks. This equates to an average of about 42mpg over the whole tank.
However I should point out that this is not to be expected. From seeing what others claim on here anywhere from 250-450 miles on a tank depending on driving style and conditions seems to be reasonable. Myself and a colleague of mine (we both have 440i GCs, he also has a 340i for his wife) find that commuting yields around about 450 miles normally. We both do about 24,000 a year in our cars. |

I generally get around 380-400 miles to a tank, it all depends on how often I slip with the experience button.
Worst I've had is 270. In 6 months the cars telling me the overall average is 32.8mpg. Fuelly is saying 31.2mpg. Most of my driving is commuting 40miles a day bit of city centre stop start and the rest is motorway at about 50 (if you use the M62 you'll know what it's like).

With my normal driving - commute and some 40-odd mile round trips to meetings, the range display hovers around 400 miles. On occasion, I have seen 500+ miles after filling up, and it will comfortably do Essex to Stirling on a tank by keeping to the speedlimits.

When I fill up the range display normally says about 380.

I got 240 miles from my last tank (Shell Vpower) but I'm mainly home based so don't use it for commuting. I do around 6 unsympathetic miles a day for the school run and my 440i has only covered 1300 miles since I picked it up in May.
My car is reading 23.6 mpg.

About 350-400 indicated in general usage.
I usually refuel with about 280 done and a quarter tank remaining. I live rural and don't like going much below 100 miles in hand. " Though, I could certainly believe 500 is easily possible on a long run. My best tank was more than 37mpg with a longer run thrown in to the mix.

300 miles with normal driving. That's with the usual mix, ie short commutes, urban driving, a couple of 40 mile journeys and a bit of tooling around.
With a lot of tooling around, it can be 250. My record is 556 miles on a tank. 18 miles range left. That was Reading-Durham-Reading. |

I fill up around there 350-360 mile mark, usually with 50 miles remaining.
Upon filling up it shows 420 miles range almost every time.

Thanks for the responses - seems about as expected having come from a 330d - stop start urban traffic seems to kill any chance of decent mpg!!!!!

So i did a 60 mile trip yesterday with good stints on the motorway and inner city driving but managed to get 36MPG in eco and turning the cruise control off when going down hills.
Is this about right? I don't know why but i was expecting 40 on a motorway |

inner city will screw it down again.
I did Reading --> Solihul --> Reading and it was sitting at 43 when I arrived, drove around to find a car park and it dropped below 40, drove home and it was at 41.something and when I got to the petrol station a few miles from the motorway it was 40.8 or 40.6. I find using limit works better than cruise if i'm in a 50 zone. Put the limit at 53 and just rest my foot on the accelerator. If it goes down hill in eco-poo mode it'll just "sail" and this saves more fuel. |

On a run like this eco pro makes very little difference for me. Also, It's easier to leave it in comfort and use cruise control on the quiet stretches. Sail mode doesn't work too well on hilly motorways, if you're trying to maintain constant speed. You either end up re-engaging the gearbox or using the brakes on the descents anyway... However, on really quiet roads I suppose you could use it to great effect on this run.
