Cost to swap tires and balance

Hey yall — my local shop (in NY) is charging me $40 labor per wheel to swap tires and do balancing. Is that normal? Is balancing required/important? $160 for all 4. Isn't that a bit steep? Never done it before so not sure if price is right. Thanks in advance!

$80 with tax included is what they charge me for my old VW. $160 is a rip off.

A bit steep. Costco (probably one of the least expensive) charges $18 to mount and balance a new tire. IIRC, Les Schwab charged me $12 per tire to re-balance a set on my truck (they wanted to charge me an additional $10/tire to rotate them! even though they were all going to be off the car. RIPOFF!)

I wouldn't pay more than $20-$25/tire.

Unless you have some issues with vibrations at speed (often at certain speeds), I wouldn't do a balance. While BMW doesn't recommend tire rotation, it's up to you if you decide to do it. Alignments are also in the "if unusual tire wear" or "pulling to one side/etc.", then do it otherwise don't bother.

So you just slap tires on wheels and do not balance them?

Very revealing. Says a lot.

That’s not what OP asked and what he replied to.

You are assuming he didn’t mean what he posted.

Yes,if you’re swapping tires, balancing is important. Find a better price.

Actually for a dealer $160 for all 4 tires isn’t bad. To take them off the car, take the tires off the wheels, remount and balance. Then put it back on the car is probably close to an hour,at least. It’s not a ripoff at a dealer.

How much should it be?
Should be the $15 or so per rim Walmart & Costco charges
though I'd never let walmart guys touch my rims
even costco guys ya gotta keep an eye on

How much is it?
Dealer wants $50 per rim
Local place wanted $40 per rim
ridiculous..
