Heard a weird noise when I started my car about 30 mins ago. I opened the hood and saw oil pooling around the filter housing. How much do you guys think this is going to cost to fix?
Last oil change was about 6000 miles ago was going to get it changed next week too |

That could be something as serious as a cracked housing or something as simple as a bad filter cover 0-ring. One can't say by looking at that picture.

Thinking it's the o-ring that went bc it's been so hot one day then freezing the next. Probably cracked the o-ring |

You don't have to replace the filter if you take the cap off, but you might as well, since the O-ring comes packaged with the filter. I guess a dealer might have just the O-ring in stock. I doubt temperature swings would bother the O-ring. Old age might, if whoever last changed your filter didn't bother to change the O-ring.

What year is your car? and how many total mileage? I've never seen oil filter housing gasket quit like that, its usually a slow leak, I also say its the o ring, theres a small one and big one on the filter cap, you might as well do the oil change now, but go buy an OEM oil filter kit this time and use those factory o rings. Hope that fixes it.

My OFHG is starting to seep and will need replacing soon. Definitely not leaking like yours though... I suspect something different than an OFHG failure on yours... maybe the cap o-ring like others have stated.

Doesn't gasket wear result in a moderate leak and gradually worsening...? A sudden gush of oil seems to by caused by a non flexible part.

So the car was stranded overnight at my friend's house about an hour away. I drove there after work, got there around 5:15. I had to stop at the only auto parts store on the way to get a filter. I replaced the o rings and the oil filter. That solved the problem. It's not leaking anymore. I had it idle until it was warm enough to measure the oil level. The level was fine, it didn't lose too much oil. I must've turned it off in time the first time. Anyway after replacing everything I drove it for an hour mile back to my house. It seems fine. tested the oil level again and it was at the same level. I inspected around where the leak was did see any oil pooling anywhere. Going to drop it off at bmw tomorrow so they can look at it, just to be safe.
The weird part about this O-rings that I took off the Filter housing were a lot thinner than the ones that came with the oil filter I bought. The one I bought was a K&N PS-7014. It seemed to seal the housing a lot better than what was in there. It was the only filter available within 30 miles, would've preferred OEM but oh well. The car is probably going to get it's oil changed when I drop it off. Last edited by vooonoo; 10-22-2018 at 08:57 PM.. |

Picked the car up, It was just the O-Ring that went bad. The service advisor said it was probably because whoever changed the oil last didn't replace them. So, I'm only taking my car to BMW for oil changes from now on.

Was just about to ask(did you buy the K&N one) as it is a known issue that's been posted on here a few times already and the culprit does seem to be the o ring.

Yeah I didn't want to buy a K&N for that reason, but it was the only one the autoparts store had that fit the car and the store was closing in 15 mins. So I had to. But the weird thing those K&N O-rings were thicker and looked better than the ones that were on the canister housing

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Even if you don't do your own oil changes it's not a bad idea to change the filter in between changes. I don't commute, so my mileage is low enough that I only change my oil once a year, in the spring. I change the filter in the spring and fall, for ten bucks why not? I just did my fall filter change and the filter was dirty enough that I can't imagine a new one wasn't called for. |

BMW uses both interchangeably for OEM. I get whichever happens to be at the lower price and is Amazon Prime the day I order it, Prime for the free shipping. You have to be a Prime member, but I save the yearly cost of Prime membership on shipping every month with all the business I do on Amazon.
