Exclamation Mods- bare minimum

If I were to purchase a 340i what are the minimum mods needed with a flash tune?

* 1) Charge pipe for sure

Let's say everything else is stock is the above the bare bones to start?

Just a daily driver, 93 only...nothing else like the normal Intercooler, exhaust, DP, etc. stuff.

Could I get by with just the above listed?

Depends on what you're looking for. If stage 1 you won't need to do anything, just run it with stock. The charge pipe is actually totally overkill on this engine according to what I've read on the forums.

At stage 2 you're looking at downpipe and exhaust.

Anything after that is beyond what most people are willing to do like meth, upgraded turbo and etc.

The 340i is a beast on its own, but with a tune it really wakes up.

I run 0 mods other then flash for 5000+ miles and haven’t had any issues. 93 octane and stage 2. Now on stage 3 with trans tune stage 1 and 93 octane and its running very fine, test numbers to be published soon!

On B58 application there is a zero need for a charge pipe unless your tune is causing some major over-boost issues. If you are looking for a fun, quick and pleasant ride, then you can go with stage 1 flash and thats it.

If you have access to 93+octane, then you can keep your car in stock form and just go with stage 2 engine flash and stage 1 trans flash. That will give you even bigger torque and power increase.

Since stock fuel is a very limiting factor, then next step would be meth injection and only after that you should be looking into Turbo/Downpipe upgrade.

Charges pipes add literally zero performance and haven't proven to be a weak point like N55 days...they just aren't needed unless you start pushing some serious power which as MP stated you will run into fueling limitations first.

Your best bet for performance is get a downpipe (not needed though), intake or drop-in filter, and run one of the Stg2 flashes that are available. Anything else is diminishing returns at the moment on this platform. Also, the intercooler isn't upgradable as of yet and isn't a choke point being a water to air intercooler.

I would tend to talk to the vendors on here that tune these cars and have the experience on what is actually needed vs what sounds cool and has been marketing hyperbole.

On my previous N55 I went with the a tune which was great coupled with the straight pipe exhaust and catless dp. It gave me good numbers with just 93. They made sure I had an upgraded charge pipe installed as the stock is apparently would not sustain.

Sounds good on the B58 engine. I'm hoping to get near 375hp and torque with just a tune from this change. Am I dreaming or is that doable?

You are looking at close to 400hp on just a tune, no other mods actually. B58 is a really great platform when it comes to flash tune responsiveness

I would suggest you first decide whether you want to go with a piggyback or a flash....once you've decided that you can drill down on the options that are offered within that category.

My personal experience with both (keep in mind I only have access to California crap gas) is that the piggybacks couldn't come close to the flash in terms of performance, linear power delivery and overall driveability.

This has generally been the case on every BMW platform once the ECU's are cracked. Take for example the current gen F8X M chassis. Once BM3 and other highly reputable flash tuners were producing tunes for the same cost as the JB4 or equivalent, piggybacks were flooding the used marketplace faster than fresh pancakes. Like yourself I've invested in just about every piggyback that was available (I think I purchased one of your used ones actually) and none of them strike every note. They are a means to an end and produce a bit of extra power. At this point in time I wouldn't invest in a JB4, AA A8, Dinan (still own one myself).

People always make the "warranty" argument for piggybacks and frankly that's a moot point as both are detectable in their own right. For the OP if your going to do it once, do it right and get a flash tune. The big question is who, and at the moment B58 only have 1-2 main tuners to look to at right now - one of them in this thread.

Yup I agree 100% with the flash tune. I've had JB4 a few times in F30 and 2 F10's but it was like just ok, nothing special. If you want a cheap fix with hiccups then JB4 all day or Cobb on N54's but the tune on my 335xi that was got stolen from my son... I still enjoy the most. So does he.

I'll have to check with Frank at TuningTech where he did my previous tune. Always looking in the future for the next BMW. The current 550i isn't doing it for me. No fun to drive, no feedback, just a heavy slug with a nice engine. Plus it's running like shit so...the days are numbered.

JB4 is a great choice.. We have a lot of customers on it and feedback is great.. When you pair it with the addon Bluetooth module it really opens up a lot of cool features and fun stuff you can do with it.

Is there any concern with a tune and an X-drive compared to just a 340I? Transfer case frailty is my first concern. Differential?

I'm trying to figure out if I get a tune what should I beware of ….XI issues?

dude stop pounding your head against the wall you're not new to this....the X drive is fine...pair it with a flash (of your choosing) and not a piggyback and start enjoying it - it's just that simple :-)

I’ve ran a tune for 9+k miles and plenty of launches... no issues whatsoever on my X drive

Just pulled a 0-100mph time of 9.06 s today on E35 and a tune only. (But need to dial back my E mix )

No engine mods needed, but i'd suggest wider/stickier tires to make sure you can use the power.
