Recalling the Recalls
The EGR cooler on my 30d was inspected and cleaned in 2019, and assessed as safe.
The EGR cooker corrugated pipe developed a hairline crack later in the same year (exhaust fumes in the engine bay and the cabin) and the cooler and pipe were replaced completely. This was just a coincidence - cracks in these corrugated pipes are a common failure. The work was done as part of the global recall programme. A few weeks ago I received a letter from BMW stating that the EGR cooler has to be replaced again as part of the recall. Today a service booking agent from Barons (the supplying dealer group) called and confirmed that the cooler has to be replaced again. Yes, the global recall is subject to a further recall. Keep a look out for your letters. Your cars may well need further work.

If it's any consolation I just got a letter today from Honda about a recall to the recall of the airbag cartridge that they replaced as part of the massive Takata recall 7 or 8 years ago. I imagine the cost of replacing it is probably equal to what a 190k 19 year old CRV is worth! Given I'm about to sell it I should probably get it done but the nearest dealer is the other side of the city and a complete pain to get to so I'm not exactly in a rush to do it.

My egr cooler was checked out over a year ago and found not to be leaking. Had the recall letter through a couple of weeks ago but never got round to sorting it out. Had Sytner phone me yesterday and car now booked in for the recall next week.
Given the car is 6 years old and still on original cooler then I'm happy to get it replaced - especially since I had a low coolant warning last week

So according to the recall it's 4 & 6 cyl diesels (ie N47 and N57) between 2012 and 2017, or something like that.
Yet my 2014 N47 apparently doesn't need a recall and hasn't had a recall in the 3 years I've owned it since early 2018. Is it just not in the system, or do not all of them actually need it, or has it been done without my knowledge?

I've got no idea if mine has ever been recalled, both BMW and Gov websites say no recalls pending. Maybe it has been in before my ownership, assume the only way to know is go to a dealer and ask.

Mine is going in tomorrow.
I'll ask again, but the Barons central booking team wouldn't tell me what the problem is other than the EGR cooler needs to be replaced even though it's already been done once.

Hi guys.
For those of you who got a recall, can you tell me the EGR brand that was installed? It should be visible on the plastic cover. Pierburg? Wahler? Metzger? And also, the part number? It's on the metal side of the part, just under the plastic cover. Thank you |
