Drivetrain error

Hi guys

I’ve a 2016 335d with 26K on it. I have intermittently experienced the drivetrain malfunction message that disappears whenever I restart the car and hasn’t ever caused any issues while driving. It only ever seems to happen when the ignition is on, the engine is off and the car is stationary.

I do know there was a cooling fan error message but I believe that’s something to do with the aircon as that only blows really cold when the car is moving.

Any thoughts?

Without the actual error code there isn't a huge amount of help to offer unfortunately. A drivetrain malfunction can be caused by a huge number of factors, some pretty minor others not.

In these cases I can't recommend a decent OBD app enough. The likes of Carly or Bimmerlink would be able to point you in the right direction pretty quickly.

Likely to be just the front ABS speed sensor. Quite common. Only a few £'s to replace yourself.

Worth getting BimmerLink (same app developer as BimmerCode but different app). That's £30, plus the OBD adapter (the v2 one from Amazon is pretty popular).

Spending £40 on an OBD adapter and app could save you spending £50 - £60 (or a lot more) on replacing parts that aren't actually faulty.

Thanks guys.

Wish I’d researched the apps more as I got BimmerCode instead of the one that can read faults sadly. But I’ll get the other one.

I don’t believe egr has been replaced but I haven’t checked to be honest

So I’ve downloaded the app and ran it on the car. It’s thrown Christ knows how many faults, none of which it said would display an error message.

However- I did save the report and it showed something

CC Message (ID 567) Motor fan! Drive moderately

Could this be it? Incidentally, while I was running the app with the car on but engine not, the drivetrain message came up again and then disappeared

With BimmerLink you have 3 different things...off the top of my head they are

- Info Memory
- Error Memory
- Permanent Errors

Info memory is irrelevant and stores loads of "problems" that don't really matter.

It's the Error Memory that you need and will show in Red which modules have errors, and give you a code plus description.

Motor fan, which I guess is the coolant radiator fan, could cause a malfunction and warning light if it's not working.

If you clear all the errors, then if you get the warning again then use the app to see what comes back, that should be your problem then.

permanent errors or info memory or error memory? If no permanent errors it could even be low battery?

if nothing in permanent probably not a lot to worry. Lowish battery. Check battery status on bimmerliis it <50%? Try taking it for a 30 minute drive. Battery charges up when you brake or coast ie foot off accelerator on decline.Or get a trickle charger off amazon. By the way phone a dealer and ask if any recall due.

Right I think I’ve got to the bottom of it, it’s this cooling fan error, cleared all codes this morning and I’ve turned the car completely off then turned ignition on but engine off and it’s thrown the same drivetrain warning and code on the app about the cooling fan

What is the code, and what exactly does it say?

I have exactly the same issue. Have you found a solution?

Probably why your A/C dont work unless moving, due to the fan not running

Did you resolve this? I'm chasing a similar issue and my fan won't run. It tries- but it just moves forward a bit then back to rest. At idle, the compressor disengages because there's no air moving over the condenser. Works fine when driving.

Hi, I have the same problem on the 2014 F25, my AC not working unless moving.
When I check the fault memory it gives me the same codes.

241800 - Electric fan, activation: short circuit to ground.
28E400 - Electric fan: does not respond.
28E500 - Electric fan: Blocking or electrically faulty

how does one check the fan without removing it from the car?
IF the fan works, is it the module or wiring?

I have a 530D With:
24F400: Electric fan, control: interruption
241800: Electric fan, control: short circuit to ground
28E400: Electric fan, plausibility: fan does not respond to test request
28E500: Electric fan, plausibility: fan error with functional restriction (fan blocked or electrically defective )

And the EGR is replaced by BMW last week. Is this a common fault after that?

Sometimes battery fault and egr faults can throw random codes .looks like yours is unlikely to be linked to egr system.

No only the codes I wrote earlier. I was suprised, by the question regarding the EGR replacement.
