Diff leak

Guys,

Had my car (328i F31) on a lift the other day and observed that the diff was wet. It looks fresh to me as it would otherwise have been more dirt collected on the wet area. Any ideas from where it is leaking (drive or prop shaft side)? Looks like seal from prop side to me. Is this common on the F series?

Going in to the dealership on 14th under warranty.

Thanks, JE

I had the same thing on my previous car. It was coming from the side seal. See post:

Glad to see that this repair will be under warranty. Is it original factory or CPO?

Actually it is an optional 3rd party insurance for used cars with a 6 month validity offered to the buyer. I am very pleased that I opted for this at a cost of USD 130 for 6 months and with a deductible of USD 100.

Car was in and out at the dealer workshop yesterday. All three diff seals replaced. Parts and labor costs equiv to USD 1000, so I am very pleased that I had my optional 6 month warranty/insurance with a premium/deductible of equiv to USD 130/100.......

I have same thing. I was under there installing AWE exhaust last week and noticed. Was just in for service and full check too, strange they didn't find this or think it's ok. MY16 48,000 miles, under CPO Elite until 75k so I should be covered.

Good that you have that CPO Elite, should be covered. My dealer felt that my injectors were noisier than average and I might get them changed under the same warranty but subject to insurance company's approval. Fingers crossed…...

I don't see why not. I'd say, get your SA or technician to test the injectors as "faulty" then there is no argument to make, right? Good for you to find a service place that looks forward like that.

Seems like this may require special tools to accomplish?

Wow! And it’s not like one or two either. Why am I not surprised?

Get a pair of pry bars to pop it off as it is just a push in and not too much force is needed and to push it back in you need to undo the big axle nut and tap it in with a hammer. Save you the $500 in tools that only you can get from GetBMW parts as no one else makes them!

This is sage advice. I’ve rebuilt a couple rear ends in my life. They were on solid axle cars, but I’m sure this wouldn’t too terribly different, and I didn’t need special tools.
