F30 NBT Retrofit issue

Hello everyone,

Im having issues with NBT retrofit on my 335I F30 2012. The car has currently entry level HU, I’m trying to retrofit NBT with navigation (none EVO). From my understanding this should be a plug and play installation, used the standard quadlock cable from the harness to the unit. Now to the issue, the NBT won’t come on after installation. Screen is black and no response from HU.

Anyone has an idea on what I’m missing here?

You are not getting power.
Check fuses. And check quad lock pin outs. Could be different.

Checked fuses, all looks good. We even tried to reconnect the OEM HU and it works fine. Could be the different connection point on the quadlock. We are thinking maybe we need NBT emulator with harness to get it working?

In some models like mine, when I went from CIC-High to NBT, the LVDS 4+2 cable pins are 180 degrees. So not only the power and ground wires are rotated, but also the LVDS 4-pin video signals.

The issue here is that the screen is dead, there is probably no power / signal to the NBT. I’ve seen cases where the user has “no signal” message showing on the screen when done retrofitting, that needs CAF vid E-sys.

I checked though the links, great reviewe I must say 😊

I purchased a retrofit cable set with CID cable, fitting is 180 degrees to the OEM cable. Do you suggest we need to rotate the cable 180 degrees from current configuration?

Below is the conversion bought off eBay

Attached picture below showing the screen connection to NBT as we have it setup today which doesn’t seem to work.

If you have both types of cables (180 vs non 180) then worth to try. Also, as said above, if you do not have a “No Signal” on your CID then it’s not even getting power. Check the two wires on the 4+2 plug that supply power and make sure the power wire has volts and vice versa.

You can also shear off the pegs in a bind to rotate the plug (not the socket) if it does not fit in the plug . It will still stay in secure. I would not mess with opening up the LVDS cable insulation or shielding, or you could severely impact the video signal.

You were spot on, thank you! I cut the OEM CID and mounted it 180 degrees, the screen popped up. Now to the next challenge, the Idrive unit is not responding. Do you know if it’s possible to code it with E-sys or do I have to get the emulator harness?

For future reference no emulator is needed for the Idrive to work if one don’t bother with the touch function, same applies to extra harness. Follow the guide below to get the Idrive unit working.

Glad it worked!

Going to bump this thread.. Gunna read more on the links posted...

Completed a HU CIC to HU NBT Retrofit on a 13 F30. Took a min to get the Dead black screen to life.. I cut the end of the Oem cable and Rotated it 180 deg. guess i got lucky replugging the power back in cause it came up right away.. Solved the issue..

NOw im went to install the MMI and need to run the LVDS Direct from HU to the MMI. I Took it all apart and didnt mark the OEm position on the power and Had no power no signal for a few hours. I actually backtracked back to stock (Coding and all) thinking the whole cable was shot...Found out the issue was the power was backwards too.
There has got to be a way to decifer the difference of the 180 cable on ebay?
Or why does it even exist if we upgraded to the newer nbt? Trying to wrap my head around that part.. Is it just the screen thats twisting the connection?

I am having the same issue with MMI box, my screen didnt turn on, I removed the box and reverted back to my oem setup, and the screen is still off, perhaps I forgot how the cabling was done during the retrofit.

If I understand correctly, I must turn the 4pins 180 and invert the 2pins as well to get my screen working ? How about the LVDS out they provide with the box, should I connect it normally or does it have to be torn apart and switched as well.

Yes u probably forgot how the cabling was done..Hell i forgot 2 days later after installing the nbt even...and reverted back to stock as well trying to figure it out...
That said.. Couple things to go off.. IF the screen is completly Black, Swap ur Pos/neg first.. THAT should get u to a "NOSIGNAL" Screen. Or it Could fully Work. If it does NOT Fully work and u have a "NOSIGNAL" on the screen tHen u know that its the AV cable needs to Rotated 180deg. Flip it upside down...NOw u should be Good to go..

That Said the above cable i posted is PERFECT for this situation.. I have installed the MMI and it took some configuration to get done trying several dif postions..CAble is Solid and locked in. not modded or cut in anyway..

ONe the cables out the box is modifiable.. I would modify that cable first to get ONE Solid cable going from just the HU to the MMI.. THen u should be able to track the progression easier..
