Heater problems

I've had my car since new....love it! She's just had the 100K service, and I mentioned the heating doesn't seem to be working (only just tried it this season the other night). When I went to collect the car they told me it needs the heater core replaced and the rear shocks need replacing. I have prepaid for servicing for 200K, and was not expecting $2,800 (plus two new tyres!!)! They have now had my car for two and a half days as it's a "difficult job" - no word yet if it's ready. Has anyone had similar issues??
