Prince Philip
Retiring aged 95 - hats off to him.
Despite the controversies I think he had character and charisma in spades. I'm neither a royalist nor a republican, but there's surely no doubt that he's given plenty of public service. Feels like another sign of a big chapter of UK history coming to an end.

Yep class bloke, actually met him a few times.
The first was as a young airman at Lossiemouth (early 1980's)our Squadron shared a Pan (parking line) with the Visiting Aircaft Section (VAS. One summer while lying on an aircraft wing, we notice these well dressed blokes walking over to our jet, so we climb down and see who it is (usually have to escort them off the line). Well turns out to be Prince Philip and he spent about 15 minutes chatting to a bunch of scruffy lineys (pond life) much to the utter terror of our senior management lol. Then a few times since, mainly Scampton and Cranwell (wife worked for Air Commodore who was Queen Mums ADC). So yes very much a class bloke |

I'm also not a royalist but I'm very fond of him. Seems like a real man's man and tends to say things as it is.

Always been a fan of PTG. He says what most of want to say. He is a funny chap and doesn't give a fuck who he offends. Hell of a lot to give up to play 'second fiddle' but I think he was and is the perfect 'husband of'.
Minor claim to 'fame' dit; my next door neighbour in my previous house was Lady Annie Horsley, widow of Air Marshal Sir Peter Horsley; Former Equerry to the Duke (1950s). She was a spirited, awesome old girl and would invite me over for drinkie-poos on occasion and tell me yarns of his time in the Royal Household and his relationship with Phillip. Quite an eye opener from the inside and she related the human side of the 'family business'. From what she would tell me, the recent TV series 'The Crown', (with Matt Smith playing Phillip) seemed quite close to the reality of the trials and tribulations of the family. It was fun when you walked in to her house to see very casual photos of her husband sat next to Phillip and various memorabilia from Phillip and the Windsors around the house. Surreal. |

I must admit I'm ignorant as to the history of the British Monarchy and it's role in society and politics today. I did see the series called The Crown on Netflix and while fictionalized, it did a good job showing Prince Phillip's life and his role in the Monarchy and as husband to the Queen. I look forward to retiring at 65 and I'm exhausted. This guys been going for 30 years longer than that with a grueling schedule with the spotlight always on. I cannot image what that must be like.
I hope he lives a long time and enjoys his quieter life. Three cheers! |
