Recommendations for Toddler Seat and Beyond
Looking for recommendations for a good fitting toddler seat for a 2018 328d. Right now, we are still using infant seat, Britax B-Safe 35, which is rated up to 35 lbs and barely fits. I actually ended up placing the seat in the middle with latch system (I know it is not rated for latch borrowing, but I feel it is very secure and safer - let's not debate that point today). Otherwise, it would only fit passenger side since the seat would have to me moved for the infant seat to fit.
I am getting worried that once he outgrows the infant seat, the next step up will have to be a bigger rearward facing seat and I won't be able to fit it well. Looking for recommendations for the best fitting seat for children starting around 12-18 months once they exceed 35lbs or become uncomfortable in infant seat. Something that will both work for backward facing and that can then convert to forward facing until he is around 60lbs and ready for last stage booster seat before transitioning to regular seating. Forward facing seats do not seem to be an issue, since they don't take forward room - it is the larger seat that faces backwards that starts to creep into front seating that worries me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |

Our son and daughter-in-law chose NextFit (by Chicco) convertible seats that accomodate 5-40 lbs in the rear facing mode, and 35-60 in the forward facing mode. We have one (soon two) in my wife's 328xd, and it works fairly well there. We can't get the passenger seat all the way back, but it's still ok for me (6' 250lb guy) to sit there. My wife won't care when the 2nd goes in as she's 5'3".
IMO it's a bit cramped for the almost 35 lb almost 4 year old in the rear mode - her feet end up in the air a bit - but she doesn't know better and likes the secure feel. |

In my 3 series, I have two seats I have used both rear-facing and front-facing that fit well and provide enough space for a 5'7" passenger up front.
-Gracco 4Ever - this seat has one of the smallest footprints/space requirements of convertible seats available. It also can be used for 4 different stages of your toddler -Britax Boulevard ClickTight ARB - this seat is slightly larger than the Gracco but not by much and fits just as well. I personally prefer this seat because it is the most safely designed seat and it is the easiest installation process (less than 1 min).

Before buying our F30, we took a Britax Boulevard ClickTight to a dealer to see if a 3/4-series would work for us, or if we’d need a G30. Fortunately, it was a go for the 3. This seat works front-facing behind me, or front- or rear-facing behind my wife. We used to use it rear-facing in our E36 coupe, which has a tighter rear seat than the F30.

I use this with ease in my 435i, only bad thing is the kiddo sits up and when sleeping his head flops forward.

I've found that the convertible seats are simply too big in front-facing modes to be actually useful, so I've bought inexpensive and smaller ones for rear facing, then a good harness booster seat once they've grown enough. I use the cheap Evenflo Tribute for the time between the detachable infant seat and putting them into a Graco Nautilus booster. The Evenflo is safe, but takes up less space behind the passenger seat. The forward facing booster with harness fits in place much better and seems more comfortable for my boy than having previously had him in a forward mode convertible.

Grace 4ever. It goes from infant to booster seat. We originally bought the Chicco keyfit zip but it's very bulky and our 3year old is about to outgrow it. The Grace 4ever has a much larger size range and isn't as bulky. It also has better cup holders.

I just replaced our Maxi Cosi Pria 85 Max with the Nuna Rava. It fits much better. Has a better angle range, and is more compact depth wise, so in my F33 backseat, I got at least another inch back. So my front passenger seat doesn't have to be so far up. I should add, I'm already in front facing mode. That being said, I've also read the Rava is excellent for rear facing for the same reasons. It is much more compact to other larger convertible car seats.

I ended up buying Nuna Rava since my biggest issue with car seats is its depth - i.e. distance from back to front, requiring seat changes for front passengers. Nuna Rava was rated as the smallest depth footprint, saving up to 2 inches vs other brands. Clek Fllo was rated as smallest width, but I feel as long as the base is less wide and seat belt clicks are easy to access, that works for me even for wider chair. I expect Nuna delivery next week and will post photos of installation to give folks an idea of its fit. It has top ratings for safety and ease of use.
I like my seats in the middle, which I feel is safer and allows for 2 passengers to fit in the back. The middle seat is not adult friendly, so it is occupied by Britax 35 currently. I know I should not borrow Latch from both sides, but it feels sturdy so I went with it. I plan to install the Nuna in the middle as well, this time with a seat belt, as Latch has a weight limit lower than the rear facing seat limit. Nuna is up to 50lbs rear and 65 front facing. My only issues with Rava is that it is $450 and to add insult to injury, it is made in China. Britax are US made from foreign materials, but are quite bulky. Gracos are foreign made too, I think. Britax Boulevard barely fit into wife's X5, she had to move her seat up a bit, I don't even want to try in my 328d. Too deep for our small cars. Will keep everyone posted here on Rava. |

I’ve got a britax marathon behind the driver seat forward facing and it’s fine with my 2 year old in my 328ix. I’m 6’3”. When it was rear facing I put it in the middle seat to allow for better leg room.

Received Nuna Rava today and installed in the middle position. Would probably be a lot easier to fit on the sides, since seat is wider, but still think middle is safer and this leaves a usable (albeit tight) space for 2 adult passengers.
Did not have to move seats at all, there is even more space from seat to back of seats compared to Britax 35 infant carrier. This is at the maximum rear facing recline, so you can save even more space by reducing recline. And this is installed with ankle support, which provides more space. Got the seat very tight, no movement at all. I can rock it by the top maybe an inch total, so very sturdy. Almost worried I overtightened the seat belt, but I don't think you can overdo it. |
