Nav only avaliable with the heads up
Hi Guys,
Upon reading the spec option sheet, I learned the Navigation on a 335i is only avaliable with the Heads Up display? I dislike the reflection the heads up gives you when its not sunny and you are not wearing polorized glasses. Can anyone confirm if this is true? |

I have the HUD in the F10 535i. I'm going to assume it will be similar to the one in the F30. The good news is I don't really have any 'glare' problems with the HUD. There is a light sensor which changes the intensity of the display automatically depending on sun conditions and it does a very nice job.
However, you will see an outline of the whole assembly on your windshield when you drive into the sun. There's nothing you can do about that. HUD on or off won't matter, it's a reflection of the dash. In the F10, you can see the reflection whether you have the HUD option or not because the dash is the same on HUD or non-HUD cars. It's somewhat annoying. I rarely see any light leakage on the windshield from the HUD itself. It has to be very dark and even then, the leakage is very slight. There is a brightness control in the iDrive for the HUD. And there is a button that allows you to turn it completely off. I enjoy the HUD option. You never have to look down at your gauges to see how fast you are going ever again. Last edited by ibimmer954; 01-11-2012 at 01:30 PM.. |

Thanks, you explained it perfectly... the sun reflects the HUD module on the windshield and that is what i am talking about. very distractive during the day when its not in use. I just dont understand why nav is not a stand alone option... |

Ive never had an issue with HUD and a sun reflection in 3+years of ownership, so I dont see it as an issue at all. Once you use HUD, you'll never want to drive without it, and in the tandem wit the Nav, you get the directions and popups in front of you, so its a natural fit for HUD and Nav to work together. For the extract $$ for both items, its worth it for sure

Most people opt for nav in luxury cars these days- now in the F30 those people are forced into dropping money on options they wouldn't have bought if they want Nav. It is short sighted as some will just walk away and take money elsewhere or not get nav and leave the brand. BMWNA will need to rethink this when the Cadillac ATS hits as it will be much cheaper. The ATS-V will cost the same as a 335i, as well as the increased competition from MB. The HUD is useless to me in summer bc I am supposed to wear polarized glasses (issues with floaters and sun spots) and that kills it, the rest of the year it is fantastic.

I have one pair of polarized sunglasses. When I'm wearing them, the HUD is almost unreadable in my 535i. But if I turn my head a little to the side, the HUD shows up much brighter. Most of the time, I don't use those glasses. But when I do, I definitely notice the issue!
