Asking what the tuner of choice is for an EGR delete. I could handle the physical removal but need a hand with the coding/tune aspect of the delete. I was a bit dumfounded when Malone quoted me $750 for an EGR tune but if that's the going rate, so be it. Just looking for alternates 1st.

Why not just have it coded out (closed) ?

Can be easily done as part of a remap, for example.

The egr is typically turned off electronically in a tune. I know mine is as it is also unplugged.

That I get. I just didn't expect to have to pay $750 to have this done and I'm looking for other providers of this service, be it a known tuner or highschooler with a laptop.

Nope, didn't bother blanking it off, just tuned out.

The coder that did mine said he could have done but costs the same as having a remap so I opted for the remap. Once the novelty wore off of having more usable power down low, economy is definitely improved, at least an improvement of +4mpg per tankful, calculated brim to brim.

Cheers, wasn't sure if you could do just the delete on its own, i'm sure some on here would disagree saying you need to blank it for various reasons, but if it hasn't affected yours in any way then why bother , how long ago did you have it done ?

The coding essentially closes it off anyway, it adjusts the duty cycle so it permanently remains closed.

Why bother with removing it and making it more obvious?!

Was coded out in February along with remap, have since also passed emissions/MOT with no issues

Wasn't worried about mot to be honest. Every blue moon i get power loss when i'm having a little bit of fun, which i can only think is overfueling, so is it caused by the map or egr valve, i'm not sure !, i don't have any black smoke and the exhaust tips are not black either, so have i answered my own question. Just can't decide whether to go ahead, bloke who did the map charges 80 quid to delete, so its not extortionate.

Wondering if I should get a tune here sooner now that my commute went down to 6 minutes where the card doesn't even get hot. Big change from my 45 minute commute prior.

Would tuning the EGR out be beneficial to help protect the car from short drive issues between long drives?

For short drives EGR on (or a dynamic EGR, if your tuner knows how) is best.

EGR is good for engine warmup.
There's less metal and bearing wear when oil is warm. Coldstarts are where engines wear the most.

Good info, makes sense. Just worried about my d now. She is used to 45 minute 70-80 mph drives twice a day, 5 days a week. Now she will be getting 10 minute city drives.

Highly recommend an EGR delete, it does so much good for the engine. Been running mine in my 335d F30 and all of my previous cars. Even with DPF intact, the regens are less frequent due to less soot build up.

The only problem is finding a guy that you can trust. To code it out fully its not easy, as most so called tuners only blank then them or unplug them and then just delete the associated DTC's and the job is done.. But thats not the proper way.

That may be so, but pumping exhaust gases into the IM does nothing for the health of the engine. IM and inlet ports get fouled, combustion efficiency is reduced, maintenance bills increase.

Modern synthetic oils have excellent cold performance, and a good quality friction modifier can improve things further.

People with 2-3 year PCPs may not be bothered about the downsides of OEM EGR operation, or notice the difference, but some of us with keepers take a different view.
