Nearly 64k miles on my 328i.

Oil filter housing has a leak. Not noticeable yet. Doesn't drop on the floor.

Steering rack has some slight popping when slowly driving over very uneven roads.

The worst issue I have had so far is every 1/3 cold starts, my rear left turn signal sends an alert to the car saying the bulb is bad. I've replaced the bulb 3x and I've replaced the bulb holder. Only thing left is to replace the car's wiring as far as I can tell.

Once I hit 100k miles, I'm getting an RC 350 F Sport. I love my F30, but there are too many build quality compromises that detract from the driving experience to risk keeping it out of warranty.

I was told that it could happen to cars that are both low and high in mileage.

First I thought it was the charge pipe, but there was no way since mine was already upgraded from stock.

performance mods:
ECU tune
Fmic
Chargepipe
catless dp
res delete
modded oem exhaust

How do you know if your car has the same issue?
-Loud short buzz noise under the hood, when waking the car up/unlocking the car
-Unable to rev past a certain rpm, in my case 4k (it sounds like launch control)
-Unable to do pulls. It kind of feels like limp mode, but its not. When you try giving gas it just makes the same launch control type noise once it reaches 4k rpm.

Before this even happened, car ran perfect and smooth without any issues.
I had the same issue around 40k miles, both actuator motor and shaft were replaced. Now that you mention that buzzing sound, I had it once when the engine was off, but it was a few years ago with much less miles and only happened once.

My symptoms were unstable idle speed (feeling like it would stall), and check engine light. Let me know I can look up the codes. I wonder if this can happen due to not changing the oil frequently enough?

How do you know the timing chain guides and the other items you mentioned need replacing? are you still driving the car?

I got simultaneous engine fault codes on VANOS system intake and exhaust, after all I could do, I took it to shop, the entire VANOS system is stuck and will not adjust, they say the failed plastic timing chain guides are the problem.

Just an update,

The car now has 125000km on it and:

-Oil pan gasket had to be replaced.

-Charge pipe had to be replaced.

-Windshield washer motor replaced.

Squeaking brakes, new motor, broken trunk latch, and bad dual mass flywheel. That's about all the things that's been replaced.

2012 F30 335i with 80k miles

I'm the 4th owner, CPO expired on Feb-2018

The AC compressor failed last week. That will be a $750 repair (I will provide the part).

Oil leveling sensor replaced under CPO. Other than that, just the usual items (battery, brakes, spark plugs, filters, tires).

What happened to the engine that caused it to be replaced?

My SA said that they replace the filter housing gaskets all the time. That was a common problem on E46s too,but only after around 100k miles. My SA couldn't explain why, but guessed it was due to the higher oil temps in FI BMWs.

I have no idea what the check valve is for. Oil cooler? VANOS? I'm glad that I caught these oil leaks on warranty, but dissapointed that they presented themselves at such low mileage.

Replaced Charge Pipe. Had to stop competing in autocross and limp to Dealer. May be related to increased boost from Dinan Stage 2. However, replaced under warranty by Dealer.

Replaced Water Inlet O-Ring. This is the for the pipe that runs from the water pump to the engine block. It was a "class 1" leak in that there wasn't any visible water, but the surrounding area was green from coolant. Last warranty item; it's all on me now....

Replaced Xenon head light

Replaced upper coolant line (between expansion tank and upper hose connector). This line is only about 1/4" and made of plastic and metal. It cracked where the plastic met the metal. BMW coolant parts usually have the decency to last to at least 60k miles, but this failed at 48k miles. I guess this part was an over achiever. I was able to drive it home by cleaning coolant off the line and then wrapping it up with electrical tape.

My engine compartment has been burning oil recently, so I suspect that I'm about to do a valve cover gasket.

History:

(Under Warranty)
(Replaced by 1st Owner)
-Steering Wheel Replaced: 10,857
-Steering Wheel and Horns Replaced: 15,238
-Ignition Coils and Spark Plugs Replaced: 21,120
-Transmission Replaced: 25,461
(Replaced by Me)
-Oil Leaks: Filter Housing Gasket, Oil Check Valve: 36,660
-Charge Pipe Replaced 37,881
-Water Inlet O-Ring replaced 41,197

(Not under Warranty)
-Xenon Headlight (left) Replaced: 44,690
-Upper Coolant Line Plastic Cracked (thin line between upper hose connector and expansion tank): 47,908
-Valve Cover Gasket: 48,130
-PVC Breather Pipe: 48,130
-Air Box to Turbo Intake Tube: 48,130
Recently replaced my valve cover gasket. I've had to replace this gasket on my E46s, but not before 50k miles! Another casualty from the hot turbo, I guess. While replacing the gasket, I had to replace the PVC breather pipe that runs from the valve cover to the intake tube because I was unable to remove it without breaking off a tab. The intake tube disintegrated while installing the new PVC pipe onto it, so I had to replace that too.

I happened to speak with the owner of an independent BMW shop at a CCA event yesterday. He said that it was likely the the gasket would leak again soon because 1) the plastic N55 valve covers tend to warp, and 2) gaskets that are not OE BMW tend to fail.

Oil filter housing looked like someone put In Stripper glitter. But, the odd thing was there was no knock and never ran low on oil, always at the max line. However, I do suspect it as a rod bearing issue. Was never told as I didn't want to pay the dealership to tear down the motor.

Guys, please keep this thread going as much as possbile. I am making an excel spreadsheet trying to get some understanding of common issues and fixes for the f30.
My format so far is
1.year
2.model
3.engine
4.transmission
5.odometer reading
6.issues
7.fixes
8.additional notes (tunes, downpipes, suspension/brake upgrades etc

I am sure I am missing something important so please chime in.
Thank you all in advance.
Cars with multiple issues will occupy multiple lines highlighted in yellow.

Holy Mackerel!

What happened to the transmission?

Also what are the symptoms of the filter housing gasket being bad? Just looks like it's leaking visibly?

I'm uncertain since it happened before I owned it. However, there are more than a few posts on this site complaining about premature wear of the 2nd gear synchro. I suspect that was the problem.

Leaking oil filter housing gaskets are common on M54 engines on E46 BMWs as well as N55 engines on F30s. These leaks are easy to spot because its right in front of the motor. Same-same valve cover and oil pan gaskets. I don't know why BMW can't get this stuff right.

My Car:
1.year - 2012
2.model - F30 320d sportline
3.engine - N47D20c
4.transmission - 8 speed auto paddleshift
5.odometer reading - 194000km
6.issues - (out of warrantee) replaced battery and replaced all 4 shocks at about 130 000km
7.fixes - cosmetic damage items replaced: sport kidney grill, bumper grill, window bead. These were due to someone that reversed into me while parking. The window bead flew off while opening up the throttle on the open road.
8.additional notes - car is stock and all oil services done at 15 000 km by a BMW dealer.

2012 f30 335i

68k miles on it

Issues I had with is passenger side window motor went bad replaced under warranty

Chargepipe broke

valve cover gasket started leaking maybe 5k miles ago fixed under warranty

Both rear wheel bearings replaced with warranty aswell at 68k miles

Front driver side shock replaced maybe 5k miles ago under warranty

That's maybe because of lowering springs tho

and I am now going to replace ignition coils because I am having small hiccup issues
