Ask yourself one question friend, when you bought your car you knew which model it was correct? That's all that matters those badges were made so a cop can identify your car easier rather than just saying white bmw it's more detail to which one. Not saying we're criminals but everything is not for everyone to know. I drive a 4 series m sport no badges and do you know how many people have no clue what I'm driving the first thing they do is walk to the back of the car and I get a kick out of there face when they have no choice but to ask. Car enthusiast like us men and women on the forums know but plenty have no clue. I've seen a 428i with dual mufflers like the 435i modded at that so your first assumption with no badge even as a enthusiast would be that's a 435. Certain things in life are better a mystery my friend.

Probably the nicest looking E90 I've seen. Love the clean subtle look.

Like how she looks clean without any clutter. Don't care about badges, the only car that looks ok with badges is a M car.

That's what license plates are for.
Those badges were made so that someone who admires your car will know what it is. Maybe want to buy one. That's it, advertising pure and simple. If manufacturers didn't see the value of putting badges on their cars they wouldn't bother to go to the expense of putting them there.

Not anymore sadly.

The question I would ask which is from the other way around, is
If de-badgers had a high spec, large engine car would they still take them off.

My F80 won't have any badges. Anyone who looks at it and doesn't know, doesn't need to know. Everyone else who knows, will know.

Yes. I drive a 320D, If I bought a bigger engine car I'd still debadge it.

Like others have pointed out, if somebody cares enough they'll know anyway and I'll gladly engage in car talk with them. Somebody who doesn't know, well it makes no differing weather I say 320 or 340 because most people don't understand the BMW lettering system.

The only exception being the M badges on the wings which I have left on as i feel it breaks up the panel a bit. Without any rub strips or anything It can look a bit plain down the sides and the small badge just breaks that up without being too noticable

Is this actually for real?

What otherwise could have been a great engine in a 'passable' (it has its appeal to a matured driver) car.

Funny subject. I was a an SCCA event 2 weeks or so ago at Atlanta Motorsports Park; was only there to watch and chat with some friends, so I drove my DD.

Some douche smart ass walks up as a few of us were standing at my car, of course he starts talking cars with us. Guy is in an E92 ///M3. I say I come regularly and other tracks.

Guy then gives a smirk grin and asks "Why do you show up here in only a 428i and not something with real power?"

My friends got quiet and big eyed awaiting my reply. I simply then asked "what if this is all I can afford?" Then said I like the car. He smirked again then said, "Ok dude", then started to walk off.

I stopped him and asked would he be back next week? He said "Sure as hell will". I said, ok then.

Last weekend I show up to actually do some track time. However, this time, as with any track session I'm in one of the family 911s. A 10 or so year old one, but a Turbo S manual.

Needless to say he didn't have much to say. That's when I asked him "why didn't you buy a real car to bring to the track? That's just a modded girlfriend on the side car for boy racers, real men drive Porsche. This is just my weekend toy."

Didn't mean that at all, but felt like making a douche look stupid. Made sure there was a crowd around also.

All this talk about engine size. Really! a stock 335i is what about 1 sec faster from 1-60 than a 328i. Unless you track your car you won't see that much of a difference. I went from a 335i to a 428i, and the 428i has enough power actually more than most cars. All the people I know prefer trucks (Texas thing), so de-badging my car will not deceive them since they don't know the difference between the cars anyway. My car to them is a BMW regardless of engine type. The thing here is you just want people to know that you spent more money on a 335i/340i/435i. I was like that once, but mods are just a personal preference. Someone made a comment about not wanting to de-badge to not get confused with a stripped down 328i. I laugh at that because some of those 328i actually cost more than a stripped down 335i. I know people with no packages on 335i, so this goes to show that this is not always the I can spend more money thing.

I will do a dual pipe conversion and de-badge because I like the look (You should see a de-badged car with a nice wax or even on a car with cquartz finest/modesta). Could I have gotten the 435i to not do the exhaust conversions sure, I could afford the difference in money ( I could have also bought a stingray and smoked all of you with a loaded stock 335i). However, getting mods for me is more fun. Seeing a new transformation always puts a smile on my face.

Most people don't buy 35/40i just because it's power.

They do it because of it's tuning potential. The 28i can never reach the level of tuning that the 35i can, guys here running pure stage 2 turbo would crap on the stingray. And when enzo finishes their 1000hp upgrade, I wonder what would be the results.

Don't forget, the i6 sounds loads better than the i4, there's no replacement for displacement.

If you see from my post I am talking about "stock" cars not tuning potential. If you want to go that route then why not get an M3/M4. In this f30 community of course you will see more tuned cars, but this is a small percent of people that own BMWs. Most will never tune their car.

Because the M3/M4 costs alot more for the mods vs the 35/40i, and no AWD.

Have you seen how much a exhaust system costs for the M cars?

Or the tunes?

Or even for an intake?

If you seen BMS dyno of the 340i, E30 gas, intake, a 800$ tune gets you to M3/M4 power.

But again, if we're talking stock, people would still buy it for the engine/exhaust notes. The 28i just has no good sound or power, at least not for me. That was the reason why I traded the 28i in, it just didn't have the tuning potential or power I was looking for.

Different cars for different people for different reasons.

My point was that de-badging or doing other mods are a personal preference. It is not always to trick people into thinking you have something you could not afford. You sort of missed the point there, but I agree with your different cars for different people. People are afraid to de-badge because others with 335i/435i always have something to say. Whether you like it or not most references indicate that people who de-badge cannot afford a 35i in many other similar threads.
