Have had 3 limp modes in the last 2-3 months. Car is at the dealer getting the aux fan replaced right now. They also cracked a hose while replacing it so now that part is also getting replaced.

LIMP Mode Aux Fan Replacement
Any help would be appreciated on current F30 335i engine issues....
So I was getting limp mode, no power from 2k-3k rpms, air conditioner blowing warm, aux fan running super loud, engine oil temp gauge pegged at far left of gauge. After shutting off the engine, I would restart and the car ran perfectly fine with the exception of the check engine light staying on. This would happen maybe once every two or three weeks, then it progressively got worse. It would happen every week, then it started happening every day. I recently replaced the auxiliary fan, and ran the check engine codes. Following codes were viewed and cleared: Thermostat Jammed Open Auxiliary Fan not running at full capacity Fuel micro leak Mass Air Flow Sensor short circuit I cleared all codes, and have put about 100 miles on it since the auxiliary fan swap. Luckily, no check engine light as of yet, but it went into limp mode again this morning and it has started to throw a "drivetrain malfunction" warning. But the car continues to run perfectly fine. After the limp mode this morning, car ran fine except the air conditioner would start to blow warm at idle, then blow cold under load and normal driving. I am starting to get really frustrated. The next fix will be the thermostat since I received the "thermostat jammed open" code. Anyone experience these problems? Any suggestions? |

So my car is currently in the dealership for this issue and the SA let me know that they are replacing the fan and reprogramming the DME. Does anyone that had the MPPK installed before having the DME reprogrammed have any issues after? I'm wondering if the MPPK is something that needs to be reprogrammed into the DME? The dealership is claiming that as long as the DME is not replaced the MPPK should not be affected but I could've sworn that I saw something different in the forums but can't find it. Thanks in advance!

Same symptom had happened to me for the second time driving on the freeway. First thing my SA says is they won't be able to do anything if they can't replicate the problem.
And I have 3 days left in my factory warranty. Thankfully I had recorded the power loss and the max fan speed outside of the car and sent those to the SA. Got an update that they ordered a new electrical fan and gonna install them tomorrow. Will report back if the problem continues. Thanks, |

Just found this thread... 2014 335i M Sport 6MT and have had 3 limp mode occurrences in the last 2 weeks. Took the car to the dealer today and waiting to hear what they say. As others have mentioned, my SA said that without any warning lights it will be tough to diagnose. Trying to time it where I can bring the car in when it goes into limp mode is a complete crap shoot since the frequency is so inconsistent. I will post back when I hear.

Have a 2013 m sport 6mt as well. 40k km. First limp mode/fan issue a few days ago. Dealer ran the codes, said the instructions were to just update the software, no new parts. Hope that was enough!

Brought this thread up as I have had three times in the last week the auxiliary fan running full speed and a notable loss of power. Two days ago when it happened I turned my JB4 delete code off and checked for codes with Torque but nothing. I may check if it happens again with ISTA.
As this thread is fairly old was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Replacing the relay is pretty cheap and looks easy, but the fan is $700....I find it odd that a fan would put the car is a semi-limp mode. It's a weird loss of power--not like a limp which I have experienced--more like no boost when a CP breaks (which I experienced as well) Also strange that it is so intermittent.

My first 335i was lemoned (BMW bought it back) because they couldn't fix the limp mode. Ordered another (6/13 production) and it too had limp mode early on.
I took it to the dealer and they had some software flash that took a few days. It has not done it since March 2014. I don't' think it's mechanical, as in relay etc.

After I get rear-ended a month ago, my 340i limped away from the scene to pull into a parking lot so we could clear the scene from rush-hour traffic.
Having observed no discernible damage that could cause such a reaction in my car, it was shocking to my wife and me and we thought it might need a flat-bed tow back home. However, everything was fine after turning the car off and on and we went home as normal. It was only later that I realized the car went into limp-mode! WHEW!

Pro demand has a TSB up
Reference Number(s): SI B12 25 13, Date of Issue: February, 2014 BMW : F30 (3 Series Sedan), F32 (4 Series Coupe); With the N20. The improved parts were introduced into production at the end of November 2013 and can be identified by the index number of '04' or higher on fan label. 3. Program the vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P. PARTS INFORMATION PN - 17427640513 x 1 ... It continues to list the warranty information and what the labor codes are. Looks like they finally gave us a TSB but well past my warranty. Think they will own up to it and flash it for me? |

I think I had all of those done in my 13 335i and it still had issues.
But i am happy to report that my 15 435i and current 18 340i did not have any Limp mode issues in the past 3+ years. So in my experience, it is most likely for MY 13 and 14. |

2014 335i build 5/14 34K miles out of warranty.
Experienced DT malfunction during idle at retail store, restarted car and went away, car sat for couple hours then "overheated warning" after I let it idle in parking lot while I was in store. I let it cool off and the Oil temp was a bit past 250 and coolant read 108 on OBC after I accessed. Turned heat on and piggyed it 3 miles from home. Got home to diagnose and I see the radiator fan will not come with the A/C on. But I also see fan trying to move, (twitching) seems like motor failure on the fan (I had a very similar issue on a high mileage E39 525i). I contacted my local big dealer and BMW USA today and they don't see anything for recalls and event the mentioned SIB 12 25 13 in this thread. Concerned of any potential damage to motor or turbos. Pretty disappointing and frustrating, a fairly new car having such significant issues. My 170K E46 M3 is still on original waterpump, radiator, aux fan, hoses, etc.. Help! |

My car went to limp mode on the freeway . When I shut down the car and restarted it.
I got the cel with code u1408 and p0128. I replace thermostat and still got the code. Both time it happen in the morning at around 50F. After deleting the code , I try driving the whole day and never happen. I am going to replace the coolant temp sensor today, anyone know if that’s it’s the culprit ? |

Hey guys! I just experienced this issue for the first time in my 2013 335i M sport Xdrive w/ a 6spd manual. I'm at 176k miles so far. It was after some freeway driving. I haven't had the car very long, I also don't do too much freeway driving. My commute is about 8 miles (30 mins) from the suburbs, so mostly flowing traffic with varying speeds but not over 50mph. I didn't have any codes and was pretty worried I broke something. haha
I'll change out the thermostat and see what happens. Water pumps are next on my list for ease of mind that I won't get stranded somewhere. Last edited by delorean175; 10-22-2019 at 08:58 PM.. |

Hi I've experienced same symptoms as you. Replaced my. Thermostat. Replaced cooling fan relay with no luck.. then I tried a new coolant temp sensor and it fixed the issue. It was a 15 dollar part at AutoZone. No more limp more or fan issues.
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...-unit/IKVv5e6d Duralast Coolant Temperature Sensor SU5172 It is mounted on the front of engine. My motor is the n20 Chris |
