340i Recall - ECU software

Just had contact from our dealer to say that the car is due a recall.

Only details the service department could provide is that it’s an ECU software update and shows as being a “preventative update”. No other details available.

Not sure if it’s B58 related, MPPSK related or just an across the board update.

Anyone else had a recall for this, or know any more specifics?!

I’ve been assured that it’s not going to affect the performance/disprupt the MPPSK software.......we shall see!!

News to me. Car was serviced 6 weeks ago and no mention of it then. When was the recall issued by BMW?

Check over on babybmw - lots of M140i owners complaining that their cars have been in for software updates and they've lost some of the overrun crackle as a result. Chat was it had something to do with idle RPM being lowered to prevent premature engine wear - who knows!

If yours has the MPPK tune I'd be worried that it might come back quieter than your used to. Certainly on here some people have mentioned the later cars with MPPK didn't have the same "pops and bangs"

Got the phonecall at the end of last week and there was little info at that time, so I imagine within the last week

This is my concern - Ive read the posts on here from those with MPPSK who have had software updates while in for a service and found it quieter.

Booked in for 18th feb, so we shall see!!

OP - see you're in West Sussex, is this Chandlers? Took them two goes to get the software right when they installed my MPPSK, so don't want anything that'll mess it up. The pops & crackles on overrun are outrageous

The dealer has a service bulletin from BMW. Can you ask the service department for SIB number?

Yeah, Chandlers Brighton. They installed the MPPSK no problem (except the usual bracket rattle!). I do smile to myself at the pops, crackles and the odd gunshot, so they better not dissapear - as far as I’m concerned they’re part and parcel of what I paid for in the MPPSK, so if they go, I’ll be kicking up a fuss!! - I need to hold on to my inner boy-racer

So here’s a question

If the software update is only to “ cure” the pops etc do the dealers have a right to tamper with your car ?

After all you’ve paid for it so do the Fuerhers at BMW have the authority/right to alter settings?

Yet curiously I booked a service for mine (non MPPSK) last week and they said there is an outstanding recall item to be done.

Interesting. I've got mppsk but not had any all or notification of any recall. Using DVLA site, also shows no outstanding recalls.

Did they say what the recall is for ?

I believe DVLA site only lists safety recalls.

If the engine is at risk of potential damage, as the relevant SIB recall suggests, I'm sure they have every right to recall, if the warranty is likely to be compromised.

The other SIB suggests the exhaust issue may also need a revision, for consistency or correction of function, (Sport/Sport+).

From the SIB on the other linked thread, that is essentially what it is, an engine 'protection' measure.

They'll be lowering the power and torque and reducing pops and crackles to save you all looking like chavs.
