The road noise is far better suppressed in the X3. I felt noise insulation should be better at urban speeds though (in the diesel). Acoustic glass may well make a big difference to help that. I'd tick that box in any car in which it is available.

Never heard of that but acoustic glass definitely does work.

Grabbed from BMW Site:
"SYNTAK: cutting-edge acoustic capsule for engine and transmission. BMW has used the SYNTAK (Synergy Thermoacoustic Capsule) technology in the new BMW 5 Series to reduce powertrain noise. The lightweight soundproofing materials encapsulating the engine and transmission team up with a series of inventive touches to lower volume levels, while also producing considerable weight and fuel savings. SYNTAK improves the powertrain’s heat retention, which in turn leads to reduced fuel consumption." |

To buck the trend, I've been nothing short of very impressed with the wife's 2.0d in the X2. It's quieter than I recal, pulls unbelievably well combined with the X Drive.
At times it does make me wonder what else is needed, but then luxury wants kick in.

Can't say I've found the noise to be too bad on my F36. Its a bit quieter than the Mazda 6 I had before but not as quiet as the A4 I had before that. To say that's it's too noisy would be a gross exaggeration though.

I find the 2.0d runs out of steam quite early but for low rev acceleration combined with the auto box its a good engine.
Away from the lights its fast enough. Overtakes i sometimes wish it had a bit more. |
