3 years on

3 years ago I brought my first brand new car, a real milestone for me, my 320d and I loved it,

3 years later, and I've upgraded to the 440 with a few mods. I'd wanted to mod my 320 but for various reasons never managed to, this time round I'm in a far better place and have been able to go all out.

I'm similar in that I went from a 20d to a 40i lol.

Do you have any more plans or is it 'finished'?

If DMS ever crack the ecu I'll have it remapped, I've also been considering the JB4 as a temporary mod, also been considering a front splitter in black to match the rest, other than that I think I'm done mate,

I'm considering this, but a friend fitted it to his with MPPSK and he said it felt really jerky.

An MPPSK is already tuned, so I'm not surprised!

I guess so, bluespark said it would work though. Not sure he didnt have it on for long, so maybe the car had to learn or something?

But with MPPSK on the cards, I dont want to waste money on a tuning box.

Maybe Bluespark were not aware of the implications of MPPSK, namely that it has a completely different ECU fitted. If different engines need a different tuning box then I don't see why an MPPSK wouldn't also.

Plus why would you put a tune on top of a tune, it doesn't make sense.

You've got the b58 mppsk engine output being sold 'as stock' on the x3 m40i, so maybe not so illogical?

Yes, the M lites have the same power output as the 340i and 440i with MPPSK, its weird. Also not sure why they didnt make the 3/4 an M lite anyway?

I dont think the MPPSK is a completely new ECU though, just a tweak to the map. So if the bluespark just tweaks the map again, then surely you would expect the same output as one without MPPSK?

Im just speculating though as this is all outside of my range of expertise lol.

But that's not a tune, it's a standard BMW engine, which you would have to wait for a tuning box to be made for that engine.

If you want more power on an MPPSK'd car the proper way to do it would be put the original ECU back in and get that remapped/fit a tuning box.

and now thanks to this I'm looking at Bluespark boxes VS jb boxes.

£500 for a JB+ made me think for an extra grand I could have a bmw tune and exhaust setup.

When these bluespark boxes are £170 its even cheaper and the gap to mppsk becomes greater. Hmmm..

I get your point. But I think there is a difference to a map and a tuning box.
MPPSK is an ECU map that takes the B58 motor to production spec of the m40i models (like the new x3).
A box could sit on top of a mppsk car (or m40i I assume) to fool the ECU further. Think the issue with the b58 is the fuelling limits.

MPPSK is an ECU map that takes the B58 motor to production spec of the m40i models (like the new x3).
A box could sit on top of a mapped car to fool the ECU further.
But there is a ceiling on how much extra power the engine can produce without having other modifications to it for example the fuel and ignition system etc

So if a standard 340i is capable of an extra 20% power with tuning box then an MMPSK 340i which is already increased by about 10% can't then have another 20% on top

The X3 M40i might have improvements to the engine to allow it an extra 20% power

Tbh I'd be happy with the MPPSK soundtrack and the claimed power from the tuning box

Agreed

Agreed, that wasn’t what I was trying to say

The X3 M40i might have improvements to the engine to allow it an extra 20% power

No, I was saying the 3/440i MPPSK is the same unit as the x3 m40i.
People have added MPPSK, then a box, to good effect - so there is some logic
.
