Yep, I've definitely only been charged £1 on a couple of expensive items I've sold recently. Obviously just make sure you activate the offer before you list the item.

I think the £1 max selling fee refers to the final value fee rather than the listing fee. I think PayPal (which is owned by eBay as well) still take a cut.
Yes, PayPal still take their cut unfortunately if the buyer pays by PayPal but I don't mind that too much if the final selling fee is only £1.

No they dont. I bought a folding mirror from some guy, everything on it worked but it did not fold. Even Simon (bc) said hed never seen one like it. eBay sided with the seller. I hate them with a passion and only use when I have to, would much rather sell another way....

Only ever use eBay as a buyer now as the seller protection is non existent and the fees they charge are ridiculous. It's changed massively from where it once was.

1 final fee offer is on again 23rd - 26th August. You will still have normal paypal fees but it makes a big difference if your selling expensive items.

Must be a more recent thing as I don't recall having had to do anything when I joined in 2006 other than give an email address and password and then provide a method of payment when I made my first order. Having said that, I suspect Amazon, as well as ebay etc., are used for all manner of nefarious things these, e.g. money laundering, so proof of who you are is not unsurprising.

I can understand trying to eliminate money laundering etc, but I just don't feel giving companies like Amazon, Facebook and Google my personal details willingly (no doubt they've probably already got them in some form or another).

I've used ebay a lot in the past but less so now

As a buyer its great for small items, eg USB cable, as usually it's free postage - unlike Amazon where if you don't have prime there's a minimum order to get free shipping.

Have sold a fair few things too. However often my motivation for selling isn't just financial, it's also not wanting to dump something perfectly functional and having someone pick it up and pay cash, hence avoiding the ridiculous paypal fees. Last thing I sold was a trampoline. It only went for 30 but I had the satisfaction that it went to a good home and the buyer did all the hard work of taking it away

Agree that it's not what it was as a seller and that's partly due to the combination of listing fees, final value fees and paypal fees making it not really worthwhile for small lower value items. I think ebay and paypal have just got greedy

I only buy on ebay now, if its not available elsewhere cheaper.
I used to sell on ebay quite a bit, but since all of the problems already mentioned, I tend to just bin stuff I dont want anymore.
I tried FB Marketplace for a bit, but they all want it hand delivered for free, or their written communications are worse than text speak.
I was selling a nearly new washing machine for 10. I thought we don't need it, so Ill help someone out thats desperate for one for a very low cost. I still got people asking for discounts etc, like they are doing me a favour lol.

I sold a basically unused 2 seat brown leather sofa in decent condition last year...

First email I received off them after the end of the auction was could I drop it off to them (15miles away) even though I clearly stated it was collection only.

These kind of people totally piss me off. It's practically being given away (I sell most things just to get rid) so you have stuff going for £1.50 kids Nike trainer, good condition, and some ball bag wants to negotiate 25p off.

That's just f**king cheeky, I'd just cancel the transaction and give the sofa to charity. Can't be dealing with idiots like this on eBay.

I would not list anything I was not willing to post on eBay, I would try selling it on Gumtree or Facebook. Starting a large item with collection only at 99p on eBay is taking a gamble as your limiting your audience to a very small amount of users, either put it on with a buy it now price or an auction with a reserve. If your not caring about making any money on it, most charities will collect large items free and the money will hopefully go to good use. And yes the buyer is a knob, who would have the cheek to ask for it to be delivered after getting it for peanuts.

I came very close to cancelling the sale.

In fact I was happy for it to go to charity anyway but unless it still has the correct anti flammable tags (who leaves those on?) they cant accept them, so eBay was actually second choice.

Yeah, I stopped using eBay a few years ago. All the fees makes selling not worthwhile and for buying I just use Amazon. eBay has had its day I reckon.

I had a sofa that wasn't good enough to sell, so I cut it up to burn it and found 26 inside.
