Replacing rear dif. transfer case - concern

Hi everyone.
Recently, I started hearing kinda thumping noise coming from the rear. Took car to the mechanic and he diagnosed that sound is coming from the rear differential transfer case. Topped of dif oil (it was a small leak) but noise didn't go away, so we decided to find an used part. My mechanic got one from tx that belonged to 340i (mine is 2013 335i). What concerned me is actual writing on the part where it seems to say 328i (or it could mean something different). In the case that part is really from 340i, Does anyone know is there any difference between 335i and 340i part? Part numbers for both can help greatly.
I accume installing one from 328i would be bad idea.
Thank you!

Yeah the gear ratios are way different. Check realoem dot com for part numbers.

That dif came from a 2016 328ix. Specifically WBA8E3G59GNT26171, not a 340.

Although the final ratio is the same as yours at 3.15, you never state if your 335i is an X-Drive or not.

Regardless, the output shafts are different and I suspect will not fit with yours. I also have some doubts about the connection to the driveshaft.

Now if you really wanted to do it right, I’d put in a BMW MPerformance LSD. I know where a new one is, but it isn’t cheap.

How the hell do you know the exact vin of the part?

Just from the barcode? That’s the only info i can see from the pic.

If your rwd, I have a part that you can use. I swapped the stock rear diff off of my 335i with only 21000 miles on it. It's been sitting in my garage ever since. I'd let it go pretty cheap if you're interested. As others have said, rwd vs xDrive and 335 vs 340 there will be differences as well as automatic vs manual transmission. You've got to ge the right one for your car

The VIN is posted in the Ebay link, in the description section.

I was lucky enough to grab one of the m performance LSD when they went on clearance a couple of years ago. It was a great deal for about 2 weeks until they sold out and production ceased after that. Aftermarket is the only option now.

Here is the relevant thread, and the post that gives good information. I do not take responsibility but I believe this guy knows what he is talking about :
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1610474

"If your car has a 3.15 final drive ratio, it will work, 328 or 335, AWD or RWD

Realoem does not list the LSD as working with the 328, but the original differential is the same part in the 335 and the 328 for the 3.15 final, which is the key. "
This is only for pre-lci automatic transmission as well. Lci (2016-onward) cars got a new final drive so they would have a different part. I don't know much about that since I have a 2015. If bmw does make one, it's going to be around 2500 + install. That's where the part for the 335 was priced before closeout.

Improved traction. Best during cornering but also felt during straight line acceleration and braking. Enables the car to take advantage of all the horsepower without wheelspin.

if it fits 328i, does it mean it fits the 320i as well since 320i and 328i shares the same N20 engine (and I think same ZF8 transmission as well)?

That is incorrect. If the 3.15 dif worked on 328i and 335i, then the OP’s dif would work. It does not work because of reasons I listed above as to why OP’s 2016 328ix would not work on his 2013 335i.

As i stated above, I know where a new unused OEM BMW MPerformance LSD is available, so aftermarket is not the only option now.

Because some of us actually look beyond what is only posted in a thread.

Listen man, I said those were not my words and I would not vouch for their accuracy. If you're considering trying to install a part that's not officially listed for your car, then you must do the research and assume the risk. Sometimes it can work like a drop in replacement, sometimes extensive modification or retrofitting is required. I was just pointing to the thread where a long technical discussion is already on the book for you all to go and read for yourselves to get informed. My experience is limited to installing a part made for the 335 on my 335. Beyond that I'm no expert on the topic.
I wouldn't think it would be worth the money and effort to the guy asking about the 320i. Those cars aren't making much power and typically shouldn't be breaking grip on a stock setup. If you aren't running extensive engine mods on a 320, the lsd is probably not worth the investment.

If you are quoting and reposting another thread, you are in fact vouching for its accuracy.

Bottom line, the fact that the OP diff were not comparable should have given away that statement was also in correct.

Transfer case is covered under warranty. I had mine replaced by the dealership 8 months ago for free. My car is a 2014 with 100k miles.
