Moving to Jersey

Hey guys, Im currently living in Kentucky but I'm about to move to Vorhees township, NJ around May. Just wanting to know tips about tinting laws, emission tests, keeping my home state license plate (maybe), go to shops? Etc.

My car specs
- ER catless DP
- BM3 Stage 1
- Tint back: 20% front: 35%

Nj inspection dosent care about tint. It's technically illegal on the front two windows but they will still pass your car through inspection. Emmisions is the only thing they check so you just need your cat and your good.

Are the cops that strict about tint laws or are they lax about it?

i live in Marlton (town over) and they wont care about 35%, if anything youll get a break on larger violations and just get tint tickets which are like $50.

welcome to the area, theres a CNC at the millers ale house on rt 73 right by the turnpike every Saturday 8am - whenever. hope to see you around

I live in Somerset. Got pulled over today actually and cops didn't care about tint whatsoever. 20 percent all around. Just don't tint the windshield and you will be good.

I live in Somerset, NJ as well, the cops have never given me and issues with tints or exhaust. Also I have never had a front plate on my car and they don't bother me with that either. From what I hear is as of a few years ago fronts plates are not mandatory in NJ, but I could be wrong.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

NJ checks emissions by plugging into the OBD port so you'll need your original downpipe to pass. Or install a Catted with a no CEL guarantee like Fabspeed or Active Autowerke.
EDIT: I just realized that you have an N20 so Fabspeed probably doesn't have a solution

A great local independent BMW shop for maintenance is MD Motorwerke in Somerdale NJ.

Kies Motorsports is close by if you want to add mods.

NJ does still require a front plate. I have mine on a tow hook mount.

Me and my boy do most of the maintenance ourselves. I did have Bridgewater BMW work on the car once when my turbo went.

How was their service dept.?

I've stopped by a few times over the years to check out whatever stock they had. And that is initially where I test drove a then-new 2015 M235i and 2017 440i, respectively. And every single time I was there they were a bunch of dismissive assholes to me. Maybe I'm projecting because I was relatively young and have a bit of baby face but they did not care for me. I kept it to myself until their manager randomly reached out to me one day via email asking for feedback and I went all Karen on them about how awful they were.

Whenever I'm back in the area, I go out of my way to get my car (under warranty) serviced at Flemington BMW instead.

Good to know thanks. We bought a house in Cherry Hill and I'll be transferring my plates to NJ from NY (unfortunately because the plates look like crap but it's cheaper for insurance)

For emissions, I will like to add that NJ state inspection checks for underbody secondary cats via floor mounted camera

Did you already move to the area? It will be nice to meet at cars and coffee as mentioned in this chat.

If you need to find a local BMW shop let me know.

Regarding tints, it's a hit or miss I guess.
I see cars with front windshields tinted, drive around cops without any issues. If they pull you over for something, they may ask for tints. The key is to be polite and not to argue or try to be a smart ass. Cops, at least in this area, as per my experience, tend to be nicer if you give them respect and accept your mistake

Yes, I already moved to Marlton 4 days ago. I renewed my tags at Kentucky before I left for jersey so I was hoping to keep my plates for about a year until I register my car here, maybe that will give me time to keep my downpipe for a year lol.

also...lmk where you guys get your car washes coz I usually use touchless car washes and I've been having trouble finding some around my area. Thanks!
