DPF problem or something else?

New thread for problem posted previously in the wrong place. (Thanks Enabled)

The following error codes were read with a Blue Driver scan tool. I searched the forum and got not hits. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to rectify these problems prior to emissions inspection. Thanks
2014 328d F31 128,000 miles Runs perfectly and it loves sport mode
Engine codes
244800 Status: Active - info
Particle filter system: limited rest mileage of particle filter

2BB100 particle filter system, particulate filter efficiency too low

25E200 Status: History-
exhaust gas difference pressure sensor particle filter, Signal: interruption or short circuit to ground

280D00 NOx-Sensor before DeNOx-cat. Signal Nox: NOx-Signal invalid for too long

Also previously had code P24AF Particulate Matter Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

Could this be the PM sensor has failed and reading false high and ECU is interpreting this as an inefficient DPF? That was my original thought until Enabled replied with a more ominous possibility.

Also looking for an indie mechanic in the western NH area (Keene, Claremont, Lebanon)

Does your tool read the actual pressures before and after dpf?
Also there's one more sensor called the backpressure sensor that would give you good info. At ignition on/engine off and cold exhaust they should read really close to atmospheric pressure.

Then the PM sensor can also be logged.
I think you should start with reading exhaust pressures and differential pressures to get an idea what is happening.

Finally had the chance to make those checks.

Barometric Pressure 14.1 psi

Exhaust Pressure Sensor
14.315 psi with cold exhaust engine off
about 17.5 psi at idle
about 26-30 psi at 2000rpm
back to 16.5 psi at idle for about 23 seconds then locked in at 16.563 for remainder of 3 min of logging.
and back to 14psi with engine off

Differential Pressure Sensor
-0.247 psi with engine off
about -0.102 psi at idle
about 0.20 to 0.25 psi at 2000rpm

Particulate Matter Sensor unchanged at -327.68%

If these numbers are not normal can anybody provide the normal range of values for these parameters. TIA

Are there any issues with the forum? I've been monitoring this thread for replies and can see that Watsey posted this morning but I can't see the post.

Still looking for suggestions regarding my CEL issue and for an indie mechanic in NH. Thanks to all.

I posted a reply but realised that I'd miss-read the diagnostics data in the recent update, so I deleted it.

Thanks for the explanation Watsey. Can anyone else out there offer any insight regarding my live data values? TIA

It looks like the PM sensor is not reading right at all, but I would think a comparison to a working car would be a bit useful. 32768 is usually a generic value when the sensor is dead.

Your differential pressures shouldn't really be negative, meaning your post dpf pressure is higher than pre dpf. That's implausible.

I'd check the tubing leading to the sensor for kinks, and the sensor itself. The ecu is definitely reacting to these odd sensor values.

This data should be supplemented with a bit of an inspection in that area. Does anything look odd or disconnected?

Thanks for the reply Enabled. As soon as I can (probably not until Thurs) I will log the same parameters in the same way on my wife's car, a '14 F30. Hers has 165,000+ miles and is all original other than recall work and gets 44+mpg. I'll report back what I find in hopes somebody can help me out and that maybe the data will help someone else out too.

It's been awhile but I was waiting on ENET cable and ISTA+ download.
After playing with the program for a while I finally figured out how to log live data and checked differential pressure sensor, NOx sensors before and after SCR, and I tried to get the Diesel Particulate Sensor to display but couldn't even find it.
So here's what I did find.

Fault codes that matter:

244800 DPF: limited remaining distance available

2BB100 Diesel particulate filter: Efficiency too low, measurement of diesel particulate sensor

2C3200 Swirl-flap actuator: Mechanically faulty (lever broken)

280D00 NOx sensor before SCR signal: NOx signal invalid for too long

Next checked the DPF differential pressure readings:
14 mbar at idle (max 35)
47 mbar at 2000 rpm (max 75)
128 mbar at 4000 rpm (max 200)

That all looked good so I eliminated the permanent DPF fault was the preprogrammed odometer based one by registering a new DPF without actually changing it.

Next I read the pre and post SCR NOx sensors:
The pre-SCR NOx sensor was reading about 70ppm and varying with engine speed. The post-SCR NOx sensor was reading -0.01 ppm fixed.

It looks like replacing the post-SCR NOx sensor should eliminate the 280D00 code unless it is just a fuse?

I can only assume that replacing the DP sensor will solve the 2BB100 code but I could not confirm this with ISTA+ because I could not find where to read the output from the DP sensor. Again, possibly a fuse?

I don't really know how to read wiring diagrams so if anybody can determine which fuses supply the DP sensor and the downstream NOx sensor and post that info. that would be fantastic. Any and all input is welcomed as I would very much like to use this vehicle but can't until it passes emissions test which it will not with a CEL or failed readiness.

Thanks to all who read this and offer suggestions.

Hey, I am also having this issue "2BB100 particle filter system, particulate filter efficiency too low" I will try to force a regen tomorrow to see what the vehicle does, But it seems to me that regens have been happening normally the soot level is low. you mentioned your "DPF differential pressure" being 14 mbar at idle while mine is 0.008 bar at idle which if i am converting it correctly is 8 mbar. so I dont know if in my case lower is better or in your case higher is better. I dont know how a DPF can fail so early as bimmerlink is saying I have 76,840 kms remaining distance of the DPF.
Looking forward to your finding

This is on a 2016 X3 28D with 151,000 kms.

Hi DreDay,
So I am glad to tell everyone that my F31 is finally on the road. The problem was a bad PM sensor. I replaced it, cleared the codes and so far the CEL has not returned. Not a terrible job but quite a few screws need to be removed to access the sensor module behind the heat shield. You also need the special socket to remove the sensor as it is larger than O2 and NOx sensors. It is also strongly recommended to get the thread chaser for this sensor bung before installing the new one. Both are available at FCP Euro; 24MM NOx & Soot Socket - Lisle 12300 and Soot Sensor Thread Chaser M22 X 1.5 - Lisle 12180. Best of luck with your repair.

I forgot to mention the SCR and NOx sensors are all good. The codes were probably set because I had the car idling too long while familiarizing myself with ISTA+ as I don't have a voltage stabilizing charger, consequently the conditions were never achieved for all the sensors to read properly so the ECU thought there was a problem with the NOx sensor. To avoid confusion, the DP (diesel particulate) and PM (particulate matter) sensor is one and the same.

I have a 2015 28d and a I have a couple of problems.
1, It says poor quality DEF and is in shut down count down.
2, There is diesel fuel in the wire harness.

I am still trying to trace the fuel sensor that is leaking into the harness.

What software are you using to diagnose problems? I have a 28d with diesel fuel in the harness and a poor quality def problem.

Hi,
Did the replacement of the DP sensor fixed your problem? Or did the CEL came back on later?

I am having the same error code 2BB100. I just forced a regen a week ago with bimmerlink and I cleared the code but the code and the CEL came back after a week.

Thanks!
