Guess I need a fuel injector
This is on my USA 328d.
Getting a code for fuel injector: P02D1 Sounds like it's partially clogged and the ECU has determined it can't make any further fuel trim adjustments. What is the accepted process for this? Order a new one? Order four? Send mine off to be cleaned and flow-tested? Is the process for swapping them easy? I'm guessing crack the fuel rail open a smidge somewhere to bleed off pressure and then unbolt, pull out, and replace? |

Get a used one from eBay (search the listings from Europe).

Very easy to replace on these engines compared to older M57.
Just get a used injector and code IMA values with ISTA or other tool when you have the time. Coding IMA value is not that important but helps to keep the adjustment values down. |

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
I bought a bottle of Archoil diesel additive and dumped the entire bottle in while filling up. The car runs quite a bit smoother now and the CEL is gone. |

Lucky! Now make sure to use something like hot shots EDT every fill up, and their diesel extreme twice a year to keep the injectors clean.

Circling back on this, the code came back after 5k miles. So I'm guessing that injector needs cleaned or replaced.
I don't _do_ ebay. Is there another place I can find these injectors? Should I replace all four or just the 1? Or should I just send them off to be cleaned? Who in america can clean these, if so? |

Also,
What tools do I need to do this job? My Bentley manual lists a number of bmw specialty tools I don't own and don't even have a way to enumerate. |

Send them off for cleaning would be a good start. Doesn't need to be a bmw specialist, just look for a mechanic that knows diesels well.
My idea is that if the treatment worked for 5k then the injector is not damaged/faulty but maybe clogged and can be saved. Cleaning the injector is a straightforward process. They are easy to remove. Search youtube for tutorials, use search terms n47 or 320d as ¨320d¨ is more common in europe. You just need to remove the fuel lines to each injector with an open end wrench. Undo the bolts holding the injector in, disconnect injector wiring and if you're lucky the injectors are not too stuck and should pop out with some force. Good luck Oh, and while you're at it. I'd recommend you change the copper washers/seals that sit on the tip of each injector. Over time they can bend and crack, which causes diesel leak. It is a very common issue. They're like 2$ a pop ![]()

I had a similar issue to you and I did the same trouble shooting steps. First I dumped a bottle of injector cleaner and that seemed to do the trick. But 3,000 miles later the code was back. Replacing the injector is pretty easy and took me about 15 minutes. You’ll need
1: an injector puller. I used this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07FD...b_b_asin_title 2: an open ended wrench for the fuel lines. I forget the size but I want to say 16mm if my memory serves me right. 3: an E torx socket for the injector bolt. Again I forget the size lol but if I had to guess I’d say E11 maybe. 4: A small pick tool Use the small pick tool to CAREFULLY remove the clips from the soft lines that sit on top of the injectors. Pull those lines and set them aside. I wrapped mine with a clean cloth to prevent debris form contaminating them. Use the open ended wrench to remove the fuel lines from cylinder 3. You will also have to remove the lines from cylinder 4 as well bc it’s routed over cylinder 3 injector. Once the line is removed simply remove the E Torx bolt holding the Injector down then use the puller to yank that mfer out. People say you can simply pull these injector out by hand, that has NOT been my experience. Just get the puller it’s only like $30. If you want to code the injector (which I strongly recommend you do), you can do so with a TopDon TopScan PRO scanner. They’re $100. You have to get the PRO model tough if you’re going with the TopDon brand. If you’re wondering why I’m back on the forum after solving the issue… it’s because the CEL came back after another 3,000 miles lol. This time with a P02D1 and P0269 code. Both of which point to another injector 3 fault. I was just trying to trouble shoot again and I think it’s because my fuel lines aren’t tight enough. For the life of me I can’t find a torque spec on those lines so if anyone knows a correct torque number, I’m all ears. Either that or I got a bad injector from FCP Euro. |
