Shuddering when braking…but not the brakes!! Help!!
Hey guys I just recently had the brakes done at the dealership and had some faulty rotors. I have a 2018 BMW 340ixdrive with M sport brakes so the brembo rotors. I heard there were some problems with the rotors coming from the factory but..?!? But I had a warranty on the rotors so they changed the rotors but after you step on the brakes and they have a smooth transition of the braking until…when you step on them hard you get a shuddering or like a small shudder when I step on them lightly. I brought it to a different shop in the area they thought it was the thrust arm bushing but they said they look all good. I might replace the brakes again since they said they had problems with the rotors from factory and go with Zimmerman rotors. But I’m not trying to spend another $1000 on more brakes. Like I said the brakes feel fine stepping on them but when your doing 40 and really give it some brakes it feels like a shuddering not shaking though and can here it only on the front driver side!!
Could it need a new axel? There is a small tad bit play on the driver side but the shops in the area can’t narrow it down. Also gonna try to replace the caliper.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks guys… Nelson R. Last edited by RodriguezM; 08-14-2024 at 03:57 PM.. |

How many miles on the suspension? My gut says the thrust arm as well if you can rule the breaks out. If you are higher mileage, probably worth biting the bullet and replacing them anyways because at some point they are going to go.

Car only has 37,000 miles on it… redid the brakes so far twice but both times with brembo rotors…so I might go with Zimmerman rotors this time. Like I said after replacing them the second time I don’t feel it in the brakes I feel like it’s in the suspension or something???

Yeah, I had the shop inspect the Lower control arms and uppers and they said they look good...nothing wrong with them. I brought it to a BMW dealership a two months ago they said there was a tad bit of play in the axel. But dk if that would cause it because they showed it to me and there was very little to no play in the axel....still looking for advice!!!
Im gonna replace they caliper this tuesday and have them flush the brakes lines and see if that does anything. But they once shop ive been bringing it to is trying to convince me its the rotors but its fine throught out the whole process of braking only when I step on it hard or really brake is when it comes around?!?! |

I had the same issue, shuddering under braking with no loss of brake power. I was lucky and noticed my driver side lower control arm bushing was leaking oil. Replaced both driver and passenger lower control arms and my shudder went away! I would try that and see if it helps before replacing brakes again. Cost me like $400.

All this replacing rotors on a low mileage car seems strange with no mention of what was wrong with the rotors. Did anyone actually measure the runout on the rotors to see if they were really warped?
How exactly did they check the front control arm bushings? Typically the big cylindrical bushing on the upper control arm leaks fluid to show that it’s shot, but it still could be bad. I’d focus on the front upper (thrust) arms. That’s the most likely based on your symptoms. Good luck! |

Hey brake pads were low and old and needed to be changed but I have not checked the run out in the rotors…I had the car checked a couple of times already for a few certain things…just didn’t want to keep dumping money into it if it gonna get me no where…the shop in the area that specializes in BMW’s checked the thrust arm bushing and the control arm bushings and they said they all looked pretty good. Not sure which way they checked them but. Said they looked good for the year and mileage of the car……

Hey guys I checked the brakes and it looked like one of the pistons wasn’t compressing so I decided just to buy a caliper and replace it and take it some where to have the brakes bled and found out… it was the caliper!!!
Thanks for everyone’s input but found out on my own without the dealerships help : ( Thanks… Nelson |
